KS3 French - Countries and nationalities
A worksheet I set as a cover lesson on where you live. It covers town, country and nationality and is fairly self explanatory so should be able to be used with a non specialist if necessary. It covers when to use a, en and au and gets students thinking about when to use capitals and how to make gender agreements.. A variety of written activites, each progressivley more difficult, ending with a differentiated homework task.
Meine Freizeit
A selection of activities for pupils in their first (or second) year of German, covering hobbies, positive and negative opinions on hobbies, and word order after a time phrase. Includes challenges for each activity for differentiation purposes. Also includes a pair work activity with a challenge for differentiation.
Past participles wordsearch
Simple sentences in the past with the past participles missing (except for the initial letter). Pupils fill in the missing past participle and find it in the word search. Regular verbs only.
La France des villes
A simple colour-coding activity to support middle and lower sets with describing town types and locations. Based on page 8 of Metro 3 vert - module 1:2.
Students first colour code the matching English and French phrases then use the phrases to write sentences. The sentences are broken down into subsections for the weaker students and there is a challenge for the more able.
Weather battleships Spanish
A simple template for battleships in Spanish on the topic of weather in the present tense.
Battleships - places in a town
A simple battleships game to practise buildings in a town. You could change the town names or the pictures.
Bataille navale, en ville
Ou travaillent-ils
A simple activity for students to match French and English places of work , followed by a gap-fill exercise in which they need to fill in either the job or place of work.
This is aimed at a middle set year 9 who have already learnt jobs in metro 3 vert.
(This is an updated version as I found a mistake in the previous version!)
La nourriture starter activity
A quick starter activity to be shown on a whiteboard but could be printed out to give to students. This was designed for a reasonably able year 8 group who have never studied the topic of food before. I displayed it so they did not see the pictures before they did the puzzle.
Students use the code to work out the words then match the words to the pictures.
IB Ab initio French Reading Assessment Food and Drink
This is a reading task for my grade eleven, near beginner French students. l looked through past IB papers and could not find anything suitable so created my own. It is for the Theme Identities and the Topic is Food and Drink.
There are 2 texts and the questions I created are similar in style to the Ab Initio ones.
One text is a factual text based on the rising number of people adapting a vegetarian or vegan diet in France
The second is an interview with a French chef
Word search on descriptions
Created to complement and supplement the description words in Expo 1 Module 2.
Le matériel scolaire
A vocabulary list of school items based on a Quizlet activity (Quizlet link is on the document)
The French is given and after completing the Quizlet activity students can fill in the missing English words and glue it into their notebooks for reference.
The vocabulary list is followed by a short and very simple paired speaking activity in which students have to ask and answer questions about the number of school items they have based on table with images.
Speaking ladder - Mi casa
This is a ladder to encourage students to speak in increasing amount of detail about the topic of Mi Casa. Students work in pairs. The first student says the first phrase or sentence and if the partner is correct they can progress to the next sentence. This continues until they make a mistake. The partner corrects the mistake and then they swap roles. Each time they swap over, the have to start from the beginning.
This activity was designed for near beginners (but in HS) with about three lessons previously on Mi Casa
This is easily adaptable for other topics or to allow for regional variations in language.
La France des villes
A simple colour coding activity for lower set pupils to help them create sentences about town types and locality based on Metro 3 vert, module 1:2.
There is a simplified version for weaker pupils and a challenge for the more able.
Past present future man soll - healthy living
A simple tense manipulation exercise putting present tense sentences into past and future. Alos has a section on man soll. Created for a fairly weak year 11 group about to start doing controlled assessment on healthy lifestyle.
Weather and leisure activities cluedo
This is a cluedo activity covering weather phrases and what pupils like to do or don't like to do. Students have to choose a phrase from each column until they guess the teacher&'s phrase (written down before hand so they can&';t accuse of cheating!) It also leads to pair-work.
It is followed by some sentences to translate, and there is a challenge for differentiated purposes at the end.
I would show the grid only on the white board for the cluedo activity before giving the English sentences.
Mis vacaciones (near future)
A simple worksheet converting simple sentences in the present tense about holidays in Spanish into the near future. Aimed at near beginners.
Cluedo - la nourriture + partitive
This is a game of cluedo best played in teams. Students are given a grid and they have to choose one phrase from each column to try and guess the sentence (chosen in advance by the teacher). After each guess the teacher says how many elements they have got right - but not which. The added challenge is to make sure they use the correct partitive.
Los verbos reflexivos y la rutina
Jigsaw Translation. A simple translation exercise. Students are give some short sentences on the topic of daily routine including some reflexive verbs. They are provided with a grid of vocabulary in chunks in order to help them recreate the sentences in Spanish.
I found the idea on mflclassroommagic.com so credit to the author, who in turn credits Gianfranco Conti for the idea.
Trapdoor Activity - donde vivo
This slide is to help revise saying where you live; including accommodation and location.
Students work in pairs. Secretly each student selects one phrase from each colored box to make complete sentences. Partner 1 starts to read the passage back to their partner, to try and guess the partner’s sentences. If they get it wrong they stop speaking and partner 2 begins to speak. The winner is the first of the 2 students who reaches the end of the partner’s passage correctly.
Où habites-tu
This is a listening resource for beginners French learning to say where they live. They have to listen to the video and decide whether they hear à dans près de or en before the name of the place. This is an introductory activity before they go on to learn which form of the word for IN they use when saying where they live.
The video is on YouTube and the link is on the document. It is originally from Coffee Break French.
