Use this project to help build a class altar for Día de los Muertos. Students are required to pick someone to honor for Día de los Muertos and celebrate their life by bringing in a picture, a sugar skull, and an offering. I’ve included 3 different versions of this project to fit three different levels of Spanish: Spanish 1: Write 25 words using present tense Spanish 2: Write 50 words using the preterite tense Spanish 3: Write 120 words using the preterite and imperfect tenses • Sugar_Skull_Box: a small craft project so that students have something to put on the ofrenda. It makes a box so they can add their offering inside.

A nice reading comprehension about a teeneager’s holiday in Costa Rica. Questions about the text, writing part and an extension about the use of Spanish past simple.

This PowerPoint was designed for my low-ability Year 8 group just before their writing test. The text tells about the typical week of Buffy, the vampire slayer. Pupils have to read, complete with the right verbs, and translate the paragraph, in order to keep a good example to follow. The starter is a translation of common phrases related to daily routine. I grew up calling these “cootie catchers” or “fortune-tellers,” but these little origami games are fun for Spanish vocab practice! Includes: 2 different “comecocos” versions student instructions explaining how to play student answer keys for checking their partner’s work instructions for YOU on how to fold these things! Vocabulary is pretty universal–but it’s specifically geared for Avancemos 1 Unit 3.1. I’ve included editable versions of documents included so that you can make modifications. I’d encourage you to give it a try! It’s a hit with students, and not nearly so hard as it looks to put together.

This worksheet allows students to practice the use of the Spanish verbs SER and ESTAR, by reading a paragraph based on the TV show “Modern Family” and filling in the blank with the appropriate verb. Student will be engaged while being familiar with the TV show. It promotes development of language acquisition by applying the concepts (ser vs. estar) in a real life situation, and reading comprehension. Answer keys have been included :) Enjoy :)

The questions will be based on family relationships and appearances. Knowledge from the movie will help with some clues, but is not necessary! Then, students will write sentences to describe different members of the family. Models are provided! Also added a very practical handout for your students. You can upload this to your school’s LMS or easily print out for your students to complete on paper. The presentation includes lots of color and fun GIFs to keep students engaged. These activities were planned as the “Día de los Muertos” lesson for Year 9s. They can also be useful for year 10s or can be adapted to lower year groups to give them some cultural insight into día de los muertos.
