Gibbs Free Energy and Equilibrium

(0)
Lesson plan and resources for a recent outstanding lesson on Year 13 Energetics. This is a very new area of the exam specification for Edexcel A-Level and as such there were few resources available to teach it. The lesson plan is self-explanatory. You may want to set the same homework for the previous lesson where students create a question for each other on Gibbs and then answer and peer assess as the start to this lesson. Please enjoy and review if you like it. Edit: 04/09/2018 - I have rewritten the card sort to make it much easier to understand and more relevant to the lesson objectives

A-Level Mindset - Focus on Effort

(0)
Using Ideas from the A-Level Mindset this standalone PSHE lesson was used before school-wide assessments to focus students’ minds on what Effort actually means, particularly in an A-Level context. This was an observed lesson for Year 12 PSHE. The resource pack includes the lesson PowerPoint, worksheet and outline lesson plan. Feedback as ever would be greatly appreciated.

Developing effective PD - for middle leaders

(0)
This resource was developed to deliver to Middle Leaders/Heads of Department/Heads of Year. The aim of the session was to outline some of the key points that make effective PD but also to ground this in a reflection of sessions which have been found to be useful. This can easily be delivered in 30 minutes with adequate time for discussion among participants. The document provided is for middle leaders to reflect on their own PD design to see where they might improve to ultimately impact student outcomes to a greater extent.

campisimcampisim

Organic Chemistry Mind Map for IGCSE/GCSE

(1)
A summary of all the detail your students will need to succeed in Organic Chemistry at IGCSE/GCSE level. Designed with CIE/Cambridge exams in mind but will be suitable for any exam board. Students can annotate in their own way to make their own links, as well as use those provided. Great visual aid for revision in Chemistry. Edit 03/10/18: Added a version of the mindmap with blanks for students to fill in. This will help promote their own revision and research of relevant knowledge for this topic. Edit 21/01/21: Added both versions of the mindmap as PDF files
iGCSE Chemistry - Particulate Nature of matter

iGCSE Chemistry - Particulate Nature of matter

(1)
A short Scheme of work and associated resources for teaching Topic 1 - Particulate Nature to Year 10 Chemistry students. This is based on CIE iGCSE specification, but could easily be modified to suit any other specification. It is designed particularly with EAL learners in mind but again would suit all abilities.
Grignard Reagents - Chemical Synthesis
campisimcampisim

Grignard Reagents - Chemical Synthesis

(0)
A full lesson presentation to help you teach one of the newest parts of the A-Level specification. The lesson starts with linking to previous learning on aromatic substitution, then exposition of the new learning, applying and consolidating it before a final review. All the chemical structures used have been drawn manually for that authentic feel. This was designed for the Edexcel A-Level specification but would also be suitable for other specifications that include Grignard in their subject content. Feedback always appreciated.
Nucleophilic Substitution - Halogenoalkanes
campisimcampisim

Nucleophilic Substitution - Halogenoalkanes

(0)
A complete and very simple lesson plan with extra resources designed for Year 12 AS and A-Level Chemistry. The lesson first checks and builds on prior knowledge of reaction mechanisms and then introduces the new reaction mechanism that students have to then apply to a slightly different context. The plenary activity is a good opportunity for AfL, exploring misconceptions as well as peer-assessment.
Transition Metals - Vanadium and Chromium
campisimcampisim

Transition Metals - Vanadium and Chromium

(2)
A set of resources, including lesson plan, for a detailed lesson on the reactions of two transition metals - Chromium and Vanadium. The files include a starter activity on identifying types of reactions which students can carry out individually or as pairs. The main activities are mind-mapping and a working memory activity which should be done in groups. Finally, there is a extension/plenary activity containing an exam style question. This is a recently observed lesson that was judged as outstanding. It does assume knowledge of electrode potentials. For reflection, I often use something like ‘plenaries on a plate’ which I’m sure can still be found in TES resources.
Bonding in Alkenes - Sigma and Pi Bonds
campisimcampisim

Bonding in Alkenes - Sigma and Pi Bonds

(0)
This is a lesson designed for Year 12 Chemistry (specifically Edexcel). The lesson works through a starter, acquiring new knowledge with questioning and diagrams and then on to an independent piece of work/plenary. Timed at just under 1 hour depending on class and any other resources/tasks added. Edit - Dec '22: Added detail to PPT and changed design elements. Added worksheet for students to record their work during the lesson
Combustion Analysis - A-Level Chemistry
campisimcampisim

Combustion Analysis - A-Level Chemistry

(0)
A set of resources for a complete lesson on Combustion Analysis for a Year 12 class ideally. There is an outline lesson plan which can be adapted to fit into your own templates as necessary. Most of the lesson is on the PPT included, but there is also a sorting/matching activity to embed this new skill with your students. Feedback appreciated as ever.
Applications of Heat Transfer

The Space Race: Interactive Powerpoint

(18)
Interactive presentation with questions on key milestones in the Space Race. Pupils can then evaluate who they think really won the Space Race and make their own timeline of events. Suitable for KS3 Physics students.
Questioning for Engagement - PD Session for teachers
campisimcampisim

Questioning for Engagement - PD Session for teachers

(0)
A full planned PD session for teachers which can take from 30 to 45 minutes. The key aim is to develop questioning strategies in the classroom which will lead to greater engagement from learners. Teachers will help develop these strategies themselves so that they are contextualised. Some key examples are given as well as a link to a second file which has many more strategies which may or may not already be in use.
Audio Visual Dictionaries IGCSE Chemistry
campisimcampisim

Audio Visual Dictionaries IGCSE Chemistry

(0)
A selection of audio-visual dictionaries to help students learn keywords for IGCSE or GCSE Chemistry. The topics covered are Electrolysis, Energetics and Chemical reactions. These have been designed with Mandarin speakers in mind but can be easily adapted for learners of any other first language (or just leave the translation out altogether). Feedback always appreciated.
Types of Oxides - Acidic, Basic and Amphoteric
campisimcampisim

Types of Oxides - Acidic, Basic and Amphoteric

(1)
A short lesson on the different types of Oxides. Designed for CIE iGCSE but can be adapted easily for other specifications. Students have to use prior knowledge of periodic table and reactions of acids & bases to work out reactions and patterns in formulae of oxides. The plenary includes some exam type questions (with mark schemes) to check for understanding. 03/10/18 Edit: Added activity which can be can be cut out and used like a card sort or to fill in the blanks for each oxide. Info on some of the oxides is above GCSE level so has already been filled in for students.
