I taught in a range of schools for many years before moving into FE, where I found creative and imaginative approaches just as rewarding with adults. Most of my resources are concerned with giving control to the learner, through a range of methods. Some are great for just giving them experience of examination questions, and the chance to discuss these with other learners. I now concentrate on spreading the range of creations from UK KS1 to KS4, and across the Common Standards.

Maths KS2 and above. Solving picture puzzles with numbers.

(1)
Algebra on KS2 states: find pairs of numbers that satisfy an equation with two unknowns enumerate possibilities of combinations of two variables. So I've created a presentation using graphical images for learners to exercise mathematical reasoning to solve missing number problems using all four rules. An accompanying worksheet/activity gives learners practice in the skills. Plus a second activity that has no words, just images, which makes it great for learners to talk to each other, and a PowerPoint presentation of the same problems allows the learners to share their thinking with the whole class. Hence can be used at any age above Year 5.

Maths Ratio using tables - an innovative approach for KS3 or KS4 GCSE

(0)
Ratio can be difficult for the learners, and especially so since it has become a more significant element of GCSE. Using tables to help structure the questions is a new and extremely useful approach, one that many learners have found beneficial. The questions are all adapted and reconfigured from past papers, and although originally set at GCSE they are equally useful for KS3. The files consist of a presentation to demonstrate the method, plus worksheets at both Foundation and Higher Tier. All files are also included as PDFs so will appear the same on any operating system. If some of the questions look relatively easy, there can be a huge difference between papers - those aimed at the top grades and those questions aimed at the middle.

GSCE Maths: Geometry statements revision

I got this idea from Jim Smith and his book 'The Lazy Teacher&'s Handbook&';. I can thoroughly recommend the book as full of ideas for teachers and learners. I took the recently published guidance from Edexcel on what the examiners expect in terms of 'why&' in geometry questions, added some images, and produced a simple slideshow to loop whilst the learners are revising questions themselves.

Maths Word Searches

Fifteen word searches in a variety of forms - doc, pdf, and as a slideshow in PowerPoint. I've included a guide on how I intend to use them, but they are easily adaptable for a variety of purposes. Solutions included but I don&'t think the point is to find all of them.

Symmetry: shading and colouring-in.

I've made blank grids and some with some bits already shaded - complete for reflective symmetry and rotational symmetry, and make up some of your own. Good for fun and display, and hopefully learning. All in Word, so feel free to edit.

Congruence, Similarity and Enlargement Quiz

Ten illustrated muliple-choice questions on congruence, similarity and enlargement, with answers. Always good in the classroom as a refresher from the previous lesson or as a quick plenary. Plus a version for the learners to complete on their own, thanks to HBeath who revised it for individual use.

GCSE lesson plans in PowerPoint - Set 1

I teach 16 plus learners in a thirty or so week programme for GCSE - some retake and some new learners. What I have done here is put the Edexcel Linear A new scheme into the weekly slots, and devided all the criteria/spec statements into Aims and Objectives. I wouldn't expect anyone to follow the same order, or keep my jokes, but please copy slides as you want. Inspectors love to see the aims pasted up, so I use PowerPoint.

Simple 2D and 3D shapes for revision at any stage. Made originally for Functional Skills

Sarah needed a simple activity to remind her functional skills learners of the names of plane and solid shapes, so I quickly made this. The plan is to show the name and the properties, and the learners sketch the shape. Unfortunately I couldn't get the animation to work, so I've built up the slides to show possible results. You can easily remove the properties - change as you like. I've lots more stuff on TES on plane and solid shapes, if you look at my shop. Plus the net of a box. The plan is to get the learners to adapt this to make a box to hold four cup-cakes. And an activity of making a box to hold cup-cakes. Enjoy.

The National Curriculum in maths for Years 3 to 6 in Word documents. Full specifications, plus all attainment targets in tables. Seventeen different files for flexible planning of Years 3 - 6 maths National Curriculum. All in Word for ease of editing. Statutory requirements, both as list and a table for recording progress etc. Notes and non-statutory guidance to keep as an appendix. Full specs as one long continuous document, again, in Word for cutting and pasting where needed.

Maths KS2: The language of numbers: factors, multiples, factor pairs, common factors, prime factors

(1)
Full set of resources to cover types of number for mathematics national curriculum in Year 5. Great for preparation for SATs in Year 6, or revision at KS3. Four clear PowerPoints with lots of questions and exercises, all with answers. Specifications: ‘Identify multiples and factors, including finding all factor pairs of a number, and common factors of two numbers.’ I’ve tried the files myself on a different computer, and had to adjust the size of text on four or five slides, but very easy to do. And because not all systems work the same I’ve included a PDF of each of the presentations - even easier to show and will always be as intended.

Maths KS2 Read Roman Numerals - presentation and lots of activities.

Specs Year 4'Read Roman numerals to 100 (I to C) and know that over time, the numeral system changed to include the concept of zero and place value.' Year 5 'Read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals.' Thirty slides on an animated PowerPoint to introduce recognition of Roman numerals, and explore the advantage of Arabic numerals. Plus lots of activities/worksheets, including Emperors' reigns, Roman roads, Olympiads, Children's TV (years), and answers. All great fun, and could be cross-curricular.

Maths Geometric Reasoning Higher Tier KS4. Great lesson for hands-on activity and discussion.

Everything for a great lesson developing geometric theorems and reasoning with circles. Matching cards activity with full solutions on PowerPoint, worksheet with corresponding presentation. Learners enjoy the hands-on activity and can keep the cards to help them solve the problems. PowerPoint can be printed for learners to keep for future reference. The lesson covers: apply and prove the standard circle theorems concerning angles, radii, tangents and chords, and use them to prove related results. It builds on my other resource for KS3 and Foundation Tier Geometry. All images ©2015 Colin Billett
