Simultaneous Equations with Balancing Animals

Simultaneous Equations with Balancing Animals

(1)
Practice in forming and solving simultaneous equations. We often talk about equations being 'in balance' and 'doing the same to both sides'. This worksheet makes that visual idea very obvious to pupils as they are presented with a series of balanced seesaws with animals on them. Each pair of seesaws leads to a pair of simultaneous equations, which can then be solved in the usual way, to find the weight of each animal. Provided with solutions.
Pythagorean Triples Project

These are a series of fractions problems set in real life contexts. They all involve percentages that can be converted into simple fractions, such as 10% = 1/10. Because of the real life contexts and gradually increasing difficulty I have found that even pupils who normally struggle will be keen to finish the sheet.

Pythagoras and Social Distancing

(1)
If everyone has to keep two metres apart, how many people can you fit in a room? This is a series of five challenges, each involving a room more difficult than the one before. Although it is not obvious to begin with, pupils will need to use Pythagoras to check that their people are all at least two metres apart. Full solutions included.

National 5 Maths – Formulas to Remember

(2)
When a pupil asked “what do we need to know for the exam” this is what I wrote. It covers every topic in National 5 maths, with examples of the formulas then ones for you to try (reading isn’t enough in maths, you need to do the problems yourself). The formulas that are in grey are the ones that you are given in the exam, but I included here anyway. Edit: Jan 2022 fixed two mistakes with indices
