A set of 5 activities and answers in Spanish for students studying Almodóvar’s film Julieta, at A level, Pre U or similar level (16+), intended for when students are about to watch the film or have just watched it. This is an alternative to my previous resource which used the same overview material, but was in the format of a traditional reading comprehension. This format incorporates 5 different activities, each of which allow for more active manipulation of the language, so it is important that the activities are not completed superficially – allow sufficient lesson time during each activity to focus on the content of the texts as well as the grammatical or syntactical aspects of the language. This content could be used for 1-2 lessons or 1 lesson and homework.

A good starter or plenary activity to recap learning on physical descriptions.

Interactive activities to introduce the colours in Spanish - for the flashcards, you could do a number of listen & repeat, call & response style activities eg. choral repetition, individual repetition, whispering repetition, shouting repetition, team repetition etc. then there are some recall activities to practise / consolidate.

Activities to practise vocab for describing hair and eyes - oral translation, then memory task, speaking, grammar practice of ser and tener and unjumbling sentences.

Two activities: Worksheet with images of celebrities - you could either project this onto the board and get rid of the boxes, and read short descriptions for pupils to match to the correct photos, or read out short phrases for each celebrity, some true, some false, and pupils note which are true. OR do it as reading comprehension - print the sheet and pupils go through and read, selecting correct options for each person. Sentence unjumble sheet to practise word order and spelling for descriptions topic. Answers included.

Two ways of using this resource: LISTENING: project the doc on the board / print copies for pupils, choose one of the people, say ‘Antonio, number 1:’ and give a short sentence or phrase in Spanish that matches one of the lines in Antonio’s profile. Pupils must find the detail and write ‘1’ next to it. Continue with all the details in his profile in a random order to practise recognising them. To make the activity harder, say a sentence in Spanish from any of the descriptions and pupils have to write the name of the person. WRITING: This activity should be completed once pupils have had extensive practice on vocab for describing physique and personality and could be used as assessment. Pupils can select one of the four people and complete sentences covering as many aspects mentioned as possible in Spanish. You could project the doc and annotate with bits of vocab in Spanish as support if necessary.

Listening gap-fill activity to practise vocab on describing people - read out the transcript included and pupils fill in gaps. Afterwards you can ask them true or false questions about each of the descriptions, or they can write their own true or false statements for each person. Following this, you could give them the same blank copy and repeat the activity but substitute the gaps for other vocab to practise!

Worksheet with table to fill in in Spanish, and completed table - teacher uses completed table to read out sentences describing each person. Teacher can make the sentences very short phrases, or include linking words and other details depending on ability level of group. Pupils note details in Spanish, then correct. You could do this activity before asking pupils to write their own description of someone. Speaking worksheet to be cut in half so opponent cannot see answers to the questions they will be asked - pupils take turns to ask each other the translations. You can make this into a game or quiz by seeing how quickly pupils can complete all translations orally correctly. Pupils can tick each line when their opponent gives an answer correctly, or you can create a rule that they have to go back to any previous answers they got wrong in order to move on etc.

Listening task for Spanish beginners on topic of food / Spanish omelette using YouTube video, can be completed in class or as homework. Separate document with answers included.

Repetitive oral drills to practise sentence structures for talking about family members - you can use the sentences to do oral translation - there are some in Spanish followed by some in English, in which pupils must use the vocab in previous sentences to help them. Then, there are questions pupils should answer orally using the vocab they have just practised. You could also use the first slide for listening tasks: say one of the green sentences in Spanish and pupils must point out which sentence you said. Or, don’t show the powerpoint, and read some of the sentences aloud for pupils to translate into English on scrap paper or miniboards. You could even do them as dictations if pupils aren’t yet able to translate - all good consolidation of the language.

Sequence of activities and worksheet based on pupils being already familiar with regular verb rules so they can work out some of the hacer and ir conjugations (inductive grammar). Activities include some dictation, listening, speaking and writing.

Lesson activity or homework task with YouTube video for pupils to learn verbs relating to free time and hobbies, and to practise understanding the different verb conjugations (this is for the very early stages of using regular verbs in Spanish, ideal for beginners)

Quick activity or starter - flashcards with verb phrases to practise verbs comer and beber with food items - first, you can do a number of listen & repeat / call & response activities (choral repetition, individual repetition, whispering, shouting, one team vs another) then do the memory activity.

For the topic of tiempo libre / pasatiempos - an aural sentence puzzle that could be used as a starter activity and then developed on using the teacher notes included. Instructions in document.

A useful bullet point summary of the plot of Julieta (Almodovar) - each bullet point is designed to get students to recall what happens in each scene and put the story back together. You could use project a scene onto the board as a lesson starter and pupils have to discuss in pairs what each point refers to, or you could get students to study the sheet as homework and make notes on each point.
