Lesson 6 of 6. This lesson looks at different volcanoes around the world, recaps on advantages and disadvantages of living near a volcano. The children will use the fact file sheets and given websites (linked at the bottom of the fact file) to research different countries with volcanoes on them.
Fact files have been designed with relation to the given websites which are linked at the bottom of the slides (on the powerpoint version of worksheets)
Lesson 5 of 6. This lesson looks at the impact of volcanoes, and why some people live closely to active volcanoes. By the end of the lesson children should be able to explain whether they would want to live near one or not.
Lesson 2 out of 6. This Lesson looks at the Earth’s crust and the explores the layers.
The activity involves children making their own earth with the layers inside, an alternative activity could be pulling apart a boiled egg and labeling.
Lesson 1 out of 6.
This unit looks at the earth’s movements and specifically volcanoes. This lesson dives into tectonic plates, their movements and continental drift theory to help children conceptualise that the plates beneath our feet are always moving.
There are lots of activities within the lesson to engage the children. You will require soil/sand for one activity as the children will dig for fossils like Wegener did to explain continental drift.
To understand Neolithic religion and the significance of
Stonehenge.
explore 3 key reasons that archaeologists think the
henge monument was built; Burial and a place of remembrance for the dead with ceremonies and feasts, a centre of healing, a place to observe the movementsof the sun and moon to mark points in the year as a solar
calendar.
Information about each theory around room or use the yr 3 research powerpoint for children to access on teams/ school server. Get the
children to record 3 pieces of evidence for the theory.
Finally bring everyone together and compare evidence collected.
Which theory do we think is most likely?
Children to write a recount of why they think this is the right
theory.
EAL, Pre keystage sheets are provided.
To understand the evolution of prehistoric art.
Place a range of pictures ,on a timeline at the front of the room, of art work created in the Paleo/ Meso/ Neo periods – write period names on the back
of the pictures.
(on the powerpoint with photos for room they are ordered for paleo - Neo time periods.
• Children to discuss how the art changed over this time and the types of
animals/ patterns used
Then they will create their own versions of early prehistoric art. Give children little square pieces of paper and charcoal to recreate cave paintings/ rock art. In books children can recreate art and then write a few sentences next to the pictures to articulate understanding.
WALT understand the significance of the Neolithic Revolution.
The children will explore that this was a time of great change - in fact so
much changed that it is now called the Neolithic Revolution.
Using Skara Brea as an example look at how these early farmers
were living.
Create a fact file or diagram of the Skara Brea village that shows
the gathered information.
Finish the lesson by asking the children
• What stayed the same between the Paleo/ Meso and
Neolithic periods of time?
• What is different between the Paleo/ Meso and Neo periods
of time?
The pedegogy is adaptive teaching so the task is the same, questions are adapted per sheet. The first sheet is designed for your pre key stage children.
Lesson 2 explores the red lady of Paviland. It aims to help children understand how the evidence of the Red Lady of Paviland builds a picture of what life was like during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods.
The children activity is to recreate what they think the red lady of Paviland would have looked like from the evidence, there are two variations of the sheet, the one with the picture is designed for pre-key stage children. The other is for everyone, using adaptive teaching a the pedagogical approach, children can use the knowledge they have attained from the lesson to support them as well as the information sheets that can be given to each table as a reminder.
For more adaptive ideas, children could also have word mats or EAL sheets to support (These are not included in this resource but as suggestive ideas for you).
Topic Focus: Flint, Fire and Forage
LO: To understand the three main periods in the Stone Age
Resources included:
Time line link for yr3 history.
Starter activity sheets.
Research sheets with matching worksheet for adaptive teaching.
Guidance on slides.
Snowman Christmas card powerpoint and some cut out resources for the children to make their snowmen exciting, ideal if you don’t have pens for them to use.
Also includes a poem for them to stick inside the card.
Lesson powerpoint that stretches over 5 days. It covers calligrams and similies with links to the polar express story. Great for christmas time with the children.
Resources are attached.
The first lesson is for an IT lesson using publisher but can be adapted accordingly.
Enjoy!
This resource is for children learning the continents and oceans.
It is set out as a map with the continents in shadow form. The children then have to stick the continents and seas onto the map in the correct places, using the shadows as guidance.
I laminated mine and used velcro tabs to make it a reusable activity for the children. This activity is a great way to develop memory skills, as well as an ability to plan, test ideas and solve problems.
