Year 4 programme of study- Measurement- measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares This math resource could also be called finding the area and perimeter of irregular shapes, polygons or compound rectangles. All the figures are composed of 2 or 3 non-overlapping rectangles. This is a natural follow on from the worksheets of Area and Perimeter of Rectangles In each shape there will be one or more side that is unknown and students will have to find its value, either by counting in the case where the figures are on a grid, or calculating where lengths are given, in order to complete the area or perimeter calculation. To find the area, students must first break down the shape into rectangles, and by either counting squares, using the formula for area or perimeter of a rectangle, get to the final answer.
