I have been designing resources for many years as I worked with preschool and primary age youngsters with delayed or impaired speech and language skills. The resources using symbols are free. My latest resources which I have illustrated are extra tasks based on Marion Blank's Language Levels (previous ones have been free). They can be used with groups of mixed language ability and are reasonably priced.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Similar maps can be made with the program Communicate Ideas. These were made in 1-1 sessions with different children to put down their ideas and info for discussion and revision. An example can be re-used and modified for another child. Text or illustrations can be incorporated as appropriate to suit different ability levels. These examples may serve as prompts for making maps on these or other topics. A printed copy can be a starting point for adding new ideas around the edge.

Connectives/conjunctions illus. by Widgit symbols

(10)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. The cards with connecting words and phrases are adaptable. Some ideas are given for promoting fluency. The level can be kept simple by reducing the number of cards in use. The activity worksheets can be used for a written reply if children can cope but most of the work can be done orally 1-1 or with a small group. The connectives for sentences with two halves often present quite a problem for kids with delayed language skills and need a lot of practice. Could also be used for EAL.

Using Language Levels by Marion Blank: 5 All About Me

All About Me includes family, pets, events, favourite things. A small vocabulary set is suggested. The main focus of the Language Levels pages is one-to-one or small group work with children who need carefully graded questions. The Marion Blank Language Levels I-IV move from very direct questioning (approx. 3y but appropriate for older children with impaired/delayed language skills) towards much more abstract work (5+y). Each of the four scenes in the story has questions at each Level. The ideas would also suit English language learning, EAL / ESL / ESOL and Speaking and Listening tasks. The same pictures are included on a single sheet for new activities. There is a simple reader (RA 6-7y) with four illustrations. The cover note includes suggestions.
