Each booklet is has been carefully designed to support students in their reading development. The texts match the reading age for each year group, are extract based and designed for a 20 minute tutor time. The texts are chunked and have discussion questions included. The texts should be teacher read and teacher led, allow for discussion and engangement with students.

This mini-scheme consists of five comprehensive lessons, aimed at building a strong foundation for studying “A Christmas Carol.” The series begins with a webquest on the social and historical context, followed by engaging and interactive lessons that explore the novella’s main motifs, themes, and characters. Ideal for the end of year in preperation for GCSE. Lesson 1: Webquest on Social and Historical Context Start with an interactive webquest that introduces students to the world of Charles Dickens and the Victorian era. Students will explore various aspects of Victorian society, including workhouses, child labour, Christmas traditions, and the Poor Law, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of the novella. Lesson 2: Introduction to Charles Dickens and Victorian Society Kick off the deeper exploration with: A mini-lecture on Dickens’ life and the social issues of Victorian England. Paired activity to create informative posters on workhouses, child labour, Christmas traditions, and the Poor Law. A gallery walk to share and discuss findings. Lesson 3: Exploring Themes in "A Christmas Carol" Help students uncover the core messages of the novella with an in-depth look at its themes. This lesson features: An interactive lecture on the main themes such as redemption, compassion, and social justice. Paired analysis of selected excerpts to identify and discuss themes. This lesson features: Paired character analysis using detailed worksheets. A reflective journal entry task from the perspective of a chosen character.
