AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the latest specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we look at transportation and depositional landforms such as moraines, drumlins and erratics.
The starter is glaciation-themed retrieval quiz.
We then look at the idea of the glacial conveyor belt, what glacial till is and what the difference between sorted and unsorted material is and why they form in different environments. The pupils create diagrams of both. We then consider moraines and the different types of moraines. The pupils have a diagram to annotate and label. We then consider drumlins, the pupils again create diagrams and learn why they show direction of movement and collective called ‘basket of eggs’ topography. We then briefly look at erratics and how they can also show the history of glacier movement. We finish with a 4 mark GCSE-style exam question with guidance on how to answer it.

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the latest specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we look at the processes of weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition in glacial environments.
The starter is just a quick photo mystery around glacial deposits.
We then look at the extent of the ice sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We introduce freeze-thaw weathering as the principle type of weathering in glacial environments as the pupils create a sequential diagram. The pupils are provided with a diagram to annotate for the processes of abrasion and plucking. We watch a video on the transportation of material by the glacier and the pupils create a diagram. They then construct a paragraph on transportation by guessing the missing words using the picture prompts. They also construct a paragraph on deposition based on sentence fragments. We finish with a 4 mark GCSE-style exam question with guidance on how to answer it.

Key Stage 3 lesson on the crusades. The lesson is at least an hour long and can easily be two lessons.
We start with retrieval practice starter. We then go on to introduce the concept of a crusade. We then examine Pope Urban’s famous sermon looking for threats to christians and potential rewards. We then introduce King Richard I before a classification task on the reasons why people went on crusade. The pupils classify the reasons in either money and power or religious reasons. The pupils then rank the reasons to work out what the main appeal of the crusades were. We then finish with a writing task where the pupils create a diary entry having been invited to join Richard’s crusade. Included is:

Key Stage 3 lesson on the Black Death. In this lesson which is approximately 1 hour, we introduce the disease, the symptoms and practice some source interpretation as well. We start with an enquiry mystery around uncovering a plague pit where the pupils are given more and more information to try to work out what the story behind the burials might be. We then introduce the disease, its origins and how it is transmitted through watching a film clip. We then create an annotated diagram around the outline of a body. The pupils will listen to the symptoms of the Black Death at various stages throughout the illness of a victim. The slides have sound effects that the pupils always enjoy. We then look at a source from medieval times and the pupils answer the question about the sources usefulness. This is supported with a writing frame and some ideas to help the pupils. We then finish by playing the game “would you have survived the plague?”. Here the pupils choose numbers that correspond to actions a medieval person may take to help them avoid catching the plague. Some work and some don’t.

AQA GCSE history lesson for The Power & The People thematic unit. In this lesson we look at the relative power balance between government and trade unions after General Strike and the events and outcomes of the Miners Strike.
We start with a historabble retrieval practice starter, a bit like scrabble but pupils must find Power & The People related words. We then look at the nationalisation of industries after WWII. Pupils then complete a road timeline “The Road to Unrest” using information cards and also create a power balance line graph to show the shifting balance of power between the Government and trade unions. We then look at the Miners Strike in more detail. The pupils then compare the Miners Strike with The General Strike for similarities and differences using a Venn diagram. The pupils then create a bio poen for either Arthur Scargill or Margaret Thatcher. We also have an extentometer plenary.

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unit 1A. We start with a simple retrieval quiz, before then looking at the situation of Naples and asking why such a large city has developed near a clear potential threat. We explore this by completing a photo challenge activity with differentiated questions. Pupils will then complete a question wheel about the different reasons why people would choose to live in areas of tectonic hazards. AQA GCSE History lesson as part of the Reform and Reformers Section of the Power and the People unit. The lesson is roughly one hour long. We start with a source question on the Copenhagen Fields Protest March. We then look at who the Tolpuddle Martyrs were and why they were transported. The pupils watch a video clip then read the information sheet. The main task is constructing a movie poster on the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The poster is divided into sections and involves several skills such as summarising, describing and evaluating as well s being creative! There are some extension questions on the significance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs to finish the lesson off. Included is:

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unit 1 A. Comparing the responses of the Chile 2010 and Nepal 2015 earthquakes. In this lesson we start with a retrieval practice grid which you can populate with your own questions. We then look at the difference between immediate and long-term responses. The pupils complete a photo interpretation task around the searching of buildings before completing a worksheet on the responses to the two earthquakes and answer some questions on what they have found. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at erosional features found on a headland, wave-cut notches and platforms, caves, stacks, stumps and arches.
We start with a simple retrieval practice grid which is good for spaced practice.
We then introduce wave-cut notches and platform. After discussion about how they may have formed the pupils use an outline diagram to add annotations and explanations. We then look at the formation of caves, arches, stacks and stumps. We watch a video clip before the pupils get to teach each other and the class about the features. The pupils then get given a drawing of Durdle Door. On the picture of Durdle Door in the present, the pupils annotate the diagram. The other two diagrams are for the pupils to trace around. The idea is that the pupils will predict what Durdle Door will look like in 400 and 800 years into the future and sketch how the headland might have been affected by erosion.
We finish with a GCSE-style question on wave-cut platforms with some guidance on how to write their answer.

AQA GCSEGeography Lesson for Unit1A. In this lesson we look at the four different types of plate boundaries; destructive, constructive, collision and conservative (transform). We start by looking at the example of Iceland. We then use information cards to complete a foldables exercise for each plate type for the pupils to stick into their books. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at the processes of erosion and transportation (Note we don’t do longshore drift until the next lesson, too much for one lesson!)
We start with a retrieval practice grid from the previous lesson (good for spaced practice).
We then introduce the concept of erosion, we watch a short video clip of he problems at Dawlish several years ago to get the pupils thinking about why erosion is important. We then look at erosion first, the pupils have a worksheet which shows the processes. They need to describe the process, locate the process on the map with an arrow and as a bonus they get to colour the diagram in (They still love doing this in year 11). We briefly look at the four processes of transportation and they do the same thing on the diagram.
Next we explore what factors might affect the rate of these processes occurring. I get the pupils to do a spray diagram or spider diagram. The pupils then use this to answer the question on the worksheet.

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at the what traffic management strategies are available to reduce congestion in urban areas and some examples of how this can be done.
The lesson has a retrieval practice starter. We then introduce the problems of traffic congestion in urban areas. In the first task the pupils use hexagons to think about the impacts of traffic congestion. We then introduce ‘carrot’ and ‘stick’ stratgeies and the students go through a range of example strategies and categorise them into ‘carrot’ and ‘stick’ strategies, ranking them in order of effectiveness and explaining their top choices. We then look at two examples of cities (Singapore and Beijing) that have adopted both of these strategies. Using a variety of videos and information slides the pupils makes notes of whether they are ‘carrot’ or ‘stick’ stratagies. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students.

The pupils try to deduce what happened to Simon of Sudbury. We then go onto to watch a video clip on the Peasants Revolt. The pupils have a crib sheet to fill in as the video plays. We then look at the events of the peasants revolt where the pupils complete an activity that involves summarising events and drawing symbols and diagrams. using the information the pupils have gained they then design a movie poster for a film about the Peasants Revolt where the pupils can show their knowledge and be creative!

Key Stage 3 lesson for a scheme of work on The Rise of The Dictators. In this lesson we recap on the causes of the Russian Revolution. We then introduce the idea of Communism and Karl Marx’s beliefs. The pupils look at the scenario he envisaged may result in Communism and summarise the stages and draw symbols to represent each stage. We then look at Lenin’s actions to change Russia. The pupils divide his changes into good ideas and bad ideas and explain why. We then look at how much the West feared communism in a ‘thermometer’ analyis. The pupils have to justify how much the governments of Western democracies feared communism at that time. We finish with a ‘to what extent’ question.

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at what managed retreat is and we also consider an example at Medmerry in West Sussex.
The starter is a a simple true or false quiz that is used for retrieval practice, but is easily edited. We introduce the concept of coastal management schemes first and then we explore the definition of managed retreat with a simple fill in the gap task and the pupils consider when it might be appropriate as a strategy and when not. We introduce Medmerry, the pupils write a description of it’s location before we look at the scheme and why it was needed. The pupils have a worksheet, the questions are answered whilst the pupils watch a video clip on the scheme. They then complete a visual plan map of the scheme to show how the area is flooded. We then consider the benefits and costs of the scheme in a categorising task.
We finish with a 6 mark question on the effectiveness of coastal management schemes. The pupils have some guidance on this if you feel they need it.

In this lesson we introduce the concept of a TNC. We then do a quick activity on the incentives for TNC’s to locate their operations in different countries. We then look at two families in Nigeria, the pupils investigate their living conditions and access to safe water, sanitation and electricity before deciding if the family would benefit from aid and if they represent the majority of Nigerian families. We the look at the benefits of International Aid and the reaons why aid may not be used effectively. We use a GCSE-style question to investigate the latter. Included in the lesson is:
