This lesson is based on the Activate 2 (P1.7) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson includes the making of electromagnets, increasing the strength of electromagnets and differentiates between permanent and electromagnets. A practical demonstration and a fun think pair and share session are included to maintain student focus. Students attempt a focus mark question based on the content of the lesson and peer assess - this can be used for focus marking. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, and how they can improve. No additional worksheets required, answers incorporated into the slides for written activities.
This lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.4) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson begins with the structure of the ear, and how we hear. Students complete their handout of the ear as you progress through the first few slides prior to a summary and correction of answers. There is then a 'gap fill' DART activity to check for understanding. The lesson then progresses to damage of hearing and how we measure sound (dB). The microphone is then compared to the ear, students must then answer a 'focus writing' task where they use their knowledge from the lesson to compare and contrast the ear and the microphone. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, and sharing their answers with peers - throwing round a soft toy is a fun way of doing this. All answers/animations/timers included within the slides.
A complete lesson for the topic of alternating current, based on AQA P5.1 but can be used for other schemes of work. The lesson is differentiated with stretch activities for more able and support sheets for less able. A practical exercise is included where students use oscilloscopes to investigate a.c. currents. The lesson includes timers to promote pace and power-point animations to facilitate Q/A during the review of each learning checkpoint. Plenary is based on students reflection against the learning objectives.
A complete lesson based on the topic of loudness and pitch. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (2.3) SOW but can be used for others. All resources/activities are incorporated into the slides, no additional worksheets required. Planner cards (red, green and yellow) are needed for AFL at one of the learning checkpoints, and an oscilloscope would be good for the demonstration - a video is included if this is not possible. The lesson teaches the relationship between loudness and amplitude, and frequency and pitch prior to class wide AFL. The audible range is discussed and students are then redirected to the question posed within the starter. Students must then design an audible deterrent systems to protect certain animals (such as a goldfish) from predators making use of a table which gives the audible range of different species. The plenary is based on student reflection on their progress against the learning objectives, a soft toy can be thrown between students to elect who reads out their answer.
Change in energy stores lesson which also covers conservation of energy , energy efficiency and flow diagrams. Based on AQA SOW, differentiated with everything you need. Timers are used to promote pace and answers are included through animation to facilitate self or peer correction.
Complete lesson tailored towards AQA but can be used for other SOW. Includes timings, and powerpoint animations to promote pace and Q/A respectively. Short practical exercise included involving the use of pendulums. Lesson is differentiated to support both less and more able.
Full differentiated lesson based on colour (activate SOW). Includes timers and animations to promote pace and Q/A during peer/self correction or marking. Whiteboard AFL activity included as well as fun 'car race' plenary.
Full lesson with everything you need. Based on activate SOW and pitched to a year 7 class. Lesson is differentiated to support both more and less able. Timings included to promote pace and animations for peer or self marking/correction.
Topic of refraction for KS3, tailored to activate SOW and pitched to a year 7 class. Can be used above or below this criteria depending on ability. Lesson is differentiated and includes timers/animations for pace and Q/A during self/peer marking.
A complete lesson on series circuits including simple practical activity. Based on AQA SOW but can be used for any. Includes timers to promote pace and powerpoint animations to facilitate Q/A during correction or marking of answers. Lesson covers the rules of potential difference, current, cells and resistance within series circuits. Practical activity involves students measuring the potential difference and current within 6 series circuits. Questions are included for an additional ‘stretch’ activity if time permits (answers incorporated) and the plenary exercise guides students to reflect on their progress against the LO’s.
A complete lesson for potential difference and resistance tailored towards AQA but can be used for any SOW. Animations are used to support Q/A during correction of answers and timers are included to promote pace. Includes theory, learning checkpoint, practical activity, example questions with learning checkpoint and plenary. Just add voltmeters, ammeters, power packs and variable resistors from the tech’s and you have all you need for the lesson.
A complete lesson on energy dissipation tailored towards the AQA SOW. Covers useful energy, wasted energy and friction with a learning checkpoints based on a past exam question. The ‘spreading out’ (dissipation) of energy is then covered ahead of a simple practical activity where students use pulleys to investigate friction and its effect upon work done. Follow up questions and answers included to facilitate peer or self marking after practical. Originally this lesson was planned fora high ability year 10 group, but has been used with year 9 group with no problems.
A full AQA physics revision lesson specifically tailored towards the P1 checkpoint (conservation and dissipation of energy). This lesson was used for a low ability group and is based on the foundation P1 test paper. Includes whiteboard activity, think pair and share, work done, GPE and power calculations. Timers are included to promote pace and PowerPoint animations are used to facilitate Q/A during review of each learning checkpoint.
A full 1h lesson covering the topic of waves. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.1) SOW but can be used for others. All activities are incorporated into the slides with no additional worksheets required. A slinky is required for a brief demonstration alongside white boards for AFL. Students are asked to perform a Mexican wave during the early stages of the lesson to visualise how energy (but not matter) is transferred within a wave. The plenary is based in students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, this can be made fun by throwing a soft toy between students and asking them to read out their answers.
A complete lesson on the topic of sound and energy transfer. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.2) SOW but can be used for others. All content is incorporated into the slides, no additional worksheets needed. The lesson is based on students drawing their own conclusions from given information or data. An activity is included where students determine where in the classroom sound would travel fastest, based on the speed of sound through different materials. A think pair and share session around thunder and lightening is used to compare the speed of light and sound. The main written exercise is a differentiated 'beat the grid challenge' where students answer as many questions as they can in 10 minutes. The plenary is based upon reflection against the learning objectives, students can be instructed to read out tier answers and popcorn this on to a peer.
A full revision lesson based on the Activate 2 (P1.5-1.8). Starter and practical exercise taken from other TES authors. Lesson covers calculating resistance, PD and current (triangle method), permanent and temporary magnets (including electromagnets). Answers to each exercise are incorporated through animation. Use as a follow on lesson from another free revision resource found in my shop (circuits, current and potential difference revision). Alternatively you could chop and stitch these together into a single lesson.

A complete lesson based on the Activate 2 (P1.8) SOW but can be used for others. Students are introduced to the uses of electromagnets with examples, video is used to incite their interest further. An introduction to motors is included (a demonstration is useful here). Students then take part in an information hunt to apply and reinforce their learning - answers included. Using Ipads students then conduct independent research on recycling and electromagnets, producing a leaflet which can be judged by peers. Students then take part in a Kahoot quiz on the topic of electromagnets (free log in and Ipads required). The plenary consists of students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, a soft toy can be thrown around to elect who reads out their answer. HW sheet and info hunt taken from TES. This can be a very fun and engaging lesson in a well managed class!
