A full differentiated lesson based on the activate 2 (P3.3) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers pressure in gases and the effects of volume and temperature. Student understanding is checked with a differentiated question grid challenge. Atmospheric pressure is introduced ahead on the 'crushing can' demonstration - very easy; a can, water, tongues and bunsen burner is required (youtube for demo). Students then reorder statements to explain their observations. The effect of altitude on gas pressure is then discussed with use of examples. The plenary is an 'articulate' activity where students make logical and scientific speeches making use of key words from the lesson. Those with the most key words used can be given a reward. This lesson includes all answers for self/peer assessment and no additional worksheets are required. The use of animation and the choice of topics to explain each theory were chosen with an emphasis on promoting a love of learning. Timers are included to promote pace.

A full differentiated lesson based on the new AQA (B7.5) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers what alcohol is, how it is absorbed and how it effects the brain and liver. A data exercise, graphic images, news articles and celebrities are used to incite and maintain student interest whilst promoting relevance. A differentiated question grid is then used to apply learning/conduct AFL. The lesson then progresses to cover alcohol and pregnancy (giving capacity for debate through think pair and share), fetal alcohol syndrome and other carcinogens. The Chernobyl disaster is used to promote interest further. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. A final plenary PP question is included as a backup, revising key topics from B7. All answers are included in the slides and timers are used to promote pace.

A full 1h lesson based on the activate 2 'metals and water' topic. The lesson incorporates a demonstration of group 1 metals reacting with water, alongside a reaction of magnesium and steam. If you are uncomfortable doing this videos can be used as an alternative. Prediction and equation writing is planned ahead of these demonstrations - students are scaffolded up to this. Students produce a mnemonic to remember the reactivity series and test their learning through a simple ( but fun) planner card activity. A great lesson to 'promote a love of learning' .

A full differentiated lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.1) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson introduces the Joule and how to calculate kJ's. Energy in different food products are compared by the students with questions and a DART activity to check for understanding. The energy requirements of different activities are then compared prior to a discussion on the balance of energy. Students then take part in a 'beat the grid' challenge answering as many differentiated questions as they can within 10 minutes. A worksheet exercise then takes place to apply and reinforce knowledge based on the content of the lesson. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. This lesson includes timers and animation to promote pace, and all answers are included in the slides to facilitate self/peer marking. This lesson also promotes the correct use of literacy and numeracy through the activities included.

A full differentiated lesson based on the new AQA SOW (B4.7). The lesson covers xylem and phloem and the importance of transport in plants. There is then a differentiated question grid and a past paper question to apply learning/conduct AFL. All answers are included to facilitate self/peer marking. There is then a simple practical (over 2 days) where students observe xylem tissue using coloured water and celery. The plenary is based upon the students reflecting on their progress against the learning objectives.

A full, differentiated lesson based on the new AQA SOW (C5.7). A starter where students categorise items as acidic, alkaline or neutral is used to determine preconceived knowledge. Following this the pH range, acids, bases, and alkalis are discussed making use of examples. Students are prompted to take notes at key points using red font and a pen symbol. The release of H+ and OH- ions is also discussed ahead of methods in determining the pH of solutions. Knowledge is then applied to a differentiated question grid followed by peer/self-marking. A practical exercise (tailored to (C5.7) is then conducted where students prepare a pH curve by systematically adding acid to an alkaline solution using a burette, and monitoring the pH using a probe. Note, pipettes and universal indicator can be used as simple alternatives respectively. Stretch questions are included for the more able. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are incorporated into the slides facilitating self/peer marking and timers are included to promote pace.

The lesson the progresses to discuss photosynthesis, temperature, humidity (etc.) and their impact on transpiration. A video is used to introduce how plants are adapted to hot, dry climates and mechanisms of controlling water loss are introduced. A differentiated question grid is then used to apply student learning and conduct AFL. The use of the potometer is then discussed prior to another video and a final past paper question. A lesson based on the Activate 2 (P1.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson involves an introduction to circuit symbols, current, measuring current and cells/batteries. Students then model current in a circuit using rope. There is then a simple practical where students measure current within simple circuits; battery packs, connection leads, ammeters, bulbs, motors, buzzers and switches are required. This is followed by a differentiated question grid challenge where students answer as many questions as they can within 10 minutes. The plenary is based on student reflection against the learning objectives. Students can be asked to read out their answers during the plenary, and this can be 'pop corned' on by throwing around a soft toy.

The lesson covers the meaning of potential difference and how to measure it, a brief mention of the key words 'series' and 'parallel' and their meaning, and a brief introduction to p.d. ratings on batteries. There is then class wide AFL with the use of planner (red, green and yellow) cards covering the information above. Students then progress to a simple practical activity where they measure p.d. across different components; battery packs, connection leads, voltmeters, bulbs and switches are required. A 'stretch' question sheet is included if students progress ahead of time, the answers for this are incorporated into the slides. The plenary is based on student reflection against the learning objectives, answers can be read out and 'pop corned' between peers.

A complete, differentiated lesson on static, with content based on the Activate 2 (P1.1) SOW. The lesson involves an introduction to charge, atoms and subatomic particles. Students are then demonstrated static electricity using balloons and a Van de Graff generator. The students can be included into to this demonstration to make things fun, if it is not possible to use this equipment then a video is included within the slides. Class wide AFL is conducted through the use of planner (red, green and yellow) cards. Students are then taught the concepts of lightening and electric fields prior to a differentiated 'beat the grid challenge', where students answer as many ranked questions as they can in 10 minutes. The plenary is based upon self refection against the learning objectives. Students can be elected to read out answers through throwing a soft toy between peers. No additional worksheets or resources required.

This lesson is based on the Activate 2 (P2.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers the law of conservation of energy, different energy stores, energy transfer and dissipation. Learning is assessed at 3 stages using think pair and share, an energy store match up, and a 4 mark question to answer. Students are scaffolded up to each task, and answers are included to allow self/peer assessment. The practical activity involves 6 small experiments that the students must visit, observe energy transfers and explain their observations within a table.
