I am a Deputy Head Teacher and have been leading assemblies for 13 years. I use music, animations and discussions in my assemblies to enhance engagement.
In each assembly, we have a different song playing for the children to walk in the hall to. The song at the beginning is always based on the theme of the asssembly. I give facts about the song and artist too, which provides links to our music curriculum. The song for this assembly is ‘Albatross’ by Fleetwood Mac.
This cross curricular assembly is based on the beautiful animation called ‘Piper’. About a little bird who never gives up (link provided). It begins with facts about the common sand piper and then discusses the lessons that can be learnt, focussing on independance and never giving up. I have added lots of notes for each slide, giving ideas on how to differentiate between year groups, questions for discussion points and vocabulary to create wordbanks which can be used to compare feelings at different points in the story.
I have used this as an observed assembly, but it can be easily adapted for class use too.
This is 10 sessions worth of Christmas English planning that I have used with Year 2 and Year 3. It is based on the wonderful advert that Sainsbury’s and The National Literacy Trust made a few years back. It is a lovely animation and can be easily found on Youtube. Mog’s Calamity. The planning provides ideas for talk for writing games and ideas, differentiated activities and resources. At the end of the sequence of lessons, the children make their own Christmas picture book of the own story, based on the story of Mog. We colour photocopy these so the children can take them home as well as sticking in books as wonderful writing evidence.
This is such an engaging resource and every year we achieve wonderful writing results.
All resources are provided for each session. This is a 2 week unit but sessions can be easily adpated and shortened/ extended, depending on the needs of your class.
I have designed a 2 week ( 10 sessions) writing plan for KS1, Years 1 and 2, based on the wonderful story of ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. Every session includes all recources needed and notes for tasks and whole class teaching. This resource also includes 5 reading activities linked to the story, along with all resources. I have also included some ideas for links to PE and Art, as well as suggested internet sites that can be used to enhance learning.
These plans can easily be adapted for an EYFS topic and this topic has been a firm favourite of mine to teach for many years now.
Please do look on my page for further Oliver Jeffers planning resources.
This Assembly presentation talks the pupils through the importance of diversity and how their morning would not have been possible without it. From breakfast to getting ready for school and more. This assembly fascinates the children and is a great way to getting them to understand the importance of a mulitculteral world.
It is a detailed presentation that includes how diverse the UK is, how all our clothes, music and sport is so very diverse. It also talks about how to celebrate it and how to respect differences.
It also conatains a wonderful youtube clip from DIVERISTY, which is a great dance celebrating diversity itself.
I have used this as an assembly but it can easily be used for a class lesson.
I have designed 2 weeks English ( 10 sessions) planning and engaging resources, based on ‘Stuck’ by Oliver Jeffers, where children will write their own stories at the end of the topic. Resources include wordbanks, sequencing activities and planning templates.
I have also included Guided Reading activities ( 3 sessions) , linked with the theme, including a Powerpoint on Gorillas and and comprehension questions,
All sessions include notes for whole class teaching and ideas for tasks. I have also included some ideas for links to other subjects such as PE and art. I have used these plans with KS1, but they can be easily adapted for EYFS and Year 3 too.
I made this powerpoint for a staff training session. It explains the importance of working walls and an engaging learning environment as well as giving hints and tips for creating purposeful environements and displays to support learning. Great for INSET or staff PDM’s.
This is a PowerPoint that I have used for several years now. It contains a lovely welcome letter that can be printed and sent home with children and contains slides for you to edit and personalise with your own photos etc. It give ideas for talking about your likes and dislikes, fears, challenges, your hopes and dreams, things you find difficult, any big mistakes you have made when teaching for example ( keep it appropriate!). It helps with letting your class know you are human and even you make mistakes and also enjoy a challenge! There is a discussion point at the end for the children to discuss theirs, which can lead into a nice writing activity or just an oral discussion.
I have used this in both KS1 and KS2.
This presentation discusses the importance of Art. It includes interesting facts about famous artists and discusses how Art is important for Breakfast ( the designs on your cereal boxes!). I have also included a slide show that includes some very interesting pieces of art which can be used a discussion point and to get the children talking! A good starting point to any piece of art project or topic or can be used as a whole school assembly topic.
This includes 4 weeks worth of planning based on stories by the same author, Oliver Jeffers. 2 weeks writing based on Lost and Found and 2 weeks writing based on Stuck.
All resources are included to teach all the sessions and I have included detailed notes on whole class teaching and tasks for each session.
Each set of plans also include reading sessions based on the books, internet site ideas for research, and ideas for other cross curricular links.
This is a great Nativity script about a shelf of toys learning about Christmas. So it includes the traditional story but with a modern twist!
It has ideas for some traditional and more modern songs which suits all ages. It includes simple stage directions and has 72 parts so can be used for the whole of KS1. This could even be easily adapted for KS2! It is all in Word so it can be easily adapted for more / less parts by including more / less non speaking or sharing some lines! It lasts for about 40 minutes and all costumes can be easily hand made. If you want any more ideas or have any queries about anything then please just leave a comment and I'll get back to you. I can give more ideas for the costumes we made.
I have included the a casting list to make it easy to cast your parts and I have also included a programme to hand out on the night of the show. All you have to do is copy and paste your casting list.
Any feedback is appreciated and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
This inspirational assembly contains information about Rowan Atkinson’s life, including his successes and failures. It focusses on the fact that he struggled with his stutter and rejections in earlier life and goes on to explain how successful he is now and what we can learn from this I have also included a page that includes cool facts about the well loved actor and a song link to play at the beginning and end of the session if you wish. The song’s theme is linked to never giving up.
If you like this assembly, please see my shop page for more aseemblies on mental health and well being.
This is a Powerpoint designed for Staff Training that outlines quality resources to enable teachers to teach Great British Values to a high standard. It can be used to improve the quality of assemblies too. These resources have been trialled for a term and are highly recommended. Great for INSET days or staff PDM’s.
I designed this for a whole school assembly. It is a quiz for Children versus the adults and is differentiated accordingly. It contains fun picture rounds, such as which character enjoys this food? Guess the book, what’s the film ( based on a book), multiple choice rounds and a tie breaker about the seven dwarfs.
The assembly also begins with interesting facts about well known books and facts about how reading can be good for you! It ends with a beautiful poem about reading by Julia Donaldson.
We had a panel of children and a panel of adults at the front and asked for help from the audience. We even invited parents and governors and it was very successful.
This was used for World Book Day but could used for a range of contexts and is suitable for KS2 and 3. Answers are included.
This bundle contains 2 assemblies that I have used to promote well being.
One is about Independence and never giving up, using a beautiful animation about a sandpiper and the other assembly is about positivity, using bananas!
I have included teaching notes for each slide, to aid discussion and ideas for questioning etc.
For each assembly I have included links to songs that can be used at the beginning and end of each assembly, linked to each theme. For each song I have included interesting information and facts about the song and artist.
I have designed this for a whole school assembly about the effects of littering on our world. I have included a link to a beautiful video and music for the children to listen to and watch whilst entering the assembly. The Powerpoint contains facts and figures about the effects of littering and provides discussion points for what we can do to help. It does contain photos to show the effect of littering too. I have used this assembly numerous times and it always gets the message across.
This assembly is about famous products that were originally made through mistakes such as fireworks, coca cola and many more. It has engaging pictures to support and the story behind each product. The message is clear, celebrate your mistakes. This can be used for any key stage and easily adapted to suit your needs.
I made this assembly to celebrate failure and explain how you succeed by never giving up. It provides the interesting and inspirational stories behind successful businesses and people who never gave up such as Colonel Sanders, JK Rowling, Honda and Lionel Messi. This can be used for any Key stage and really engages all pupils.
