This lesson builds on students understanding of the balance of payments from Theme 2, we now look at the financial and capital account as well as the current account. We start by recapping what the BoP is, some context given on surplus and deficits before we look at the causes and consequences of current account deficits. A group task for students to come up with policies to reduce a current account deficiit before we go through a range of strategies to address deficits in the BoP. This lesson introduces learners to the concept of economic development. Before we introduce this we recap what growth is, and consider the limitations of using growth/GDP as a measure of a countries development. We introduce the human development index and look at rankings of countries to gain some context. We look at the pros and cons of using HDI as a way to compare levels of development. A very interestesting topic due to the application of the financial crisis. We start by recapping what market failure is and how banks fail. We then look at the 2008 financial crisis to understand what happened. Examples of different market failures are given, video case studies to help students contextualise. A 15 mark question on whether banks should be bailed out, indicative points and a peer assessment grid is included for students to use. This double lesson introduces learners to organic growth, we start by looking at the problems of rapid growth from the previous lesson before looking at the methods of organic growth and their advantages and disadvantages. We then go on to read a short case study on a ready meal manufacturer based in Bradford, who have grown organincally since 1979. A 10 mark question on this with structure guidance and a concise model answer provided, to help students peer assess against the criteria. This is followed by a research task for students to find a company that has grown organically (link for poundland given if students struggle to find), they then present their findings back to the class - structure for this is provided too. This lesson introduces learners to the causes and effects of change, we start by looking the what causes change, such as changes in size, poor performance and transformational leadership. We then go on to look at the effects of change before looking at a case study on a supermarket which has suddently improved performance after a new CEO joined. A 12 mark question on what caused the change with structure guidance and a concise model answer for students to peer assess with. I have included a peer assessment grid which is similar to how examiners assess essays and this could be a good tool for students to understand what makes a top band answer.
