Year 6 Sea Themed-cross curricular unit
The Island, by John Heffernan is a wonderful story about a blind boy who sees the beauty of the island he lives on, while the people around him cannot see it. A fantastic story with a link to a narration by the author. Some great links to support the teaching of this book with activities based around marine life across many subject areas. Lots of links with a fully interactive timetable which links to my pinterest board. A free resource from GoTeachThis and Ripper Reading Resources, makes this amazing value for money and such a time saver. Stage 3 bundle is also available.
This pack includes both a green themed printable banner and a white version for coloring the beautiful lettering that has been chosen for this resource. They look amazing when they are colored
These are best printed on card stock so that they don’t curl at the edges, unless you are intending to laminate them as a long lasting resource.
I suggest leaving a section at the top that can be folded over in order to hang over a string or and then stapled or taped to secure the display.
They also look great pinned onto a notice board…the choice is yours.
This is the perfect addition to the gigantic collaborative group coloring poster

A Social Narrative is an effective way to teach children how to navigate a new situation, such as starting school or preschool or in this instance learning to go to school ‘virtually’.
Social Narratives can help children understand what to expect at school or preschool.
Encouraging children to try using independence in problem solving in situations where safety is a prime concern, is a common social skill that needs to be frequently addressed.
As educators we need to explicitly teach these skills.
This story can be used to help children to broaden their technology skills and learn to work in a new learning environment away from school.
Do many of your students have a negative attitude towards school?
Do you find times when you find teaching can be overwhelming?
These colorful posters will help to foster a positive mindset and to find some inspiration.
Use them as a conversation starter and teaching focus.
Print them 4 to a page and laminate as prompts for students to refer to.
You will receive one PDF with 14 different posters for you to choose from.
They make great binder pages, images framed in photo frames, laminated to have on display in your room.
Printing them 2 or 4 to a page make a great thank you card or resource to print off for your students.

The illustrations in it are stunning, and you can see how closely the illustrator David Blythe and author have worked to bring this story to life. Please view the video above to give you an idea of everything that is incorporated into this unit.

Need to make a classroom agreement with your students or need a set of words to develop positive mindset in your classroom.
•These cards are designed to be used as a classroom display, however, my belief is that there needs to be authenticity around any activity we undertake with our students.
•Students need to understand what each of the terms/words mean or “look like”.
•Divide the class into groups and give them a set of words each…….get them to brainstorm how each word is relevant to the classroom and their learning goals.
Use a word as a teaching focus for a day or a week, and give students real life examples of each. Praise students who are demonstrating the mindset you may be focusing on eg Why is it important to be risk takers?
•Where do we use mathematics- what does a mathematician do?
•Why is it important to have music in our lives?
•How do we know a person is a great listener?
• How do inventors help our lives?
•What does being a good team mate look like?
•Students may like to add pictures of their own heads onto the various shapes and outlines.
•Use this on a poster board, or use your classroom door as a display for these motivating words.
