This is an Introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a full and comprehensive topic that would fit nicely into 3 x 1-hour lessons, but could be squeezed into 2 x 1-hour lessons with a gifted A-Level Music class if the final task was also set as homework.
The content is based around an introduction to Bach Chorales. There are 4 tasks in total.
Task 1 is: choosing chords to harmonise a melody. This is based on identifying the key , drawing out triads, and matching given melody notes with the triads/ chords, leading to a 4-part arrangement of the chord progression they have chosen, applying the techniques that are introduced throughout.
Task 2 is: Arranging for 4 parts. Students are given a fixed chord progression with which to harmonise the melody from task 1. Meanwhile the PowerPoint will take them through the following: Note Doubling; Consecutive 5ths ; Consecutive 8ves ; Consecutive Unisons ; Chord Spacing ; Six-Way check (SA; ST; SB; AT; AB; TB) to prevent banned consecutives.
Task 3 is: Using passing notes to create momentum. Students will be shown a model answer on the PowerPoint to Task 2, which then becomes the starting point for Task 3. The PowerPoint takes students through passing notes (what they are, what they do, and pitfalls of using too many at once) and then students are to add passing notes to the given arrangement.
Task 4 is: Working in a minor key. Students use the tonic minor to largely transfer their arrangement from the major, but new concepts are introduced for them to think about: melodic augmented 2nds (and using the melodic minor scale to avoid them); Tierce de Picardie cadence (where, how, and why it’s used); the tricky Mediant in minor keys.
From a teaching perspective, you have a full 20-slide Powerpoint making delivery of content easy, MP3 audios of the model answers so students can hear how nice good 4-part writing really sounds, Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 templates if you want to use Music ICT to complete the tasks, 4 x PDF worksheets (that you’ll want to hand out one at a time because model answers become the next worksheet!) in case you don’t have/ don’t wish to use Music ICT.

This topic focuses on Articulation, which includes volume dynamics. Specific content is as follows: Piano/ Pianissimo/ Mezzo Piano; Forte/ Fortissimo/ Mezzo Forte; Pianoforte/ Fortepiano/ Diminuendo/ Crescendo; Accent/ Marcato/ Sforzando; Portato/ Staccato/ Staccatissimo; Legato/ Tenuto; Rim shot. This lesson focuses primarily on the Circle of Fifths, and this includes both the major and minor keys up to and including 4 sharps and flats. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 14 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ knowledge of how keys are organised. This is not just a lesson in ‘what’ the Circle of 5ths is, students are taught how to create the circle from scratch. This reinforces understanding, and it also incorporates revision of major and minor scales, with a focus on how major scales create accidentals which become key signatures for major and relative minor keys.
Students also discover relationships between keys on the Circle of 5ths as a foundation to appropriate/ most common modulations: Dominant keys to the right/ Subdominant to the left/ Relative Major or Minor inwards or outwards on the rings. This resource comprises 10 worksheets designed to secure, revise, and test knowledge of bass and treble staff notation. Aimed at Key Stage 3 students, each worksheet should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, making them perfect for starter activities or for short tests. Similarly, they can be used in combination to form longer tests (including suitability for GCSE Music course tests); they can even be used to create up to two full 1-hour cover lessons for a supply teacher who may have no music specialist knowledge whatsoever. If you use them for the latter, you needn’t worry about coming back to a huge pile of marking either, because full answers are included in the resource pack, so students can mark and correct their own work on the day!
Specifically, the worksheets incorporate the following types of activity: identifying note pitches on the bass and treble staff; identifying words written out in bass and treble staff notation; writing given words out in bass and treble staff notation; unscrambling words that have been written out in bass and treble staff notation; converting words written out in bass staff notation to treble staff notation, and vice versa. A handy little guide to notation, which can be printed as small cards ahead of the lesson, has also been included so that students can simply work the notes out, even if they’ve never seen staff notation before – so everything has been thought of for your convenience.

This resource is suitable for AS and A Level Music and from Grade 4 to Grade 6 ABRSM Theory. This is at least a whole lesson worth of content and activities, and probably 2. It is fully supported by a 29-slide PowerPoint and 2 worksheets, all with complete and detailed answers.
This resource pack could be used for both revision and content delivery. By the end of worksheet 1, students will be confident in identifying and labelling all six basic types of non-harmony notes, which create mild melodic dissonance: Echappée; Cambiata; Passing; Neighbour; Appoggiatura; Anticipations. Students will also be taught (and given practice in) distinguishing between chromatic and diatonic dissonance, and between accented and unaccented dissonances created by each of the six types of dissonance stated above.
The second worksheet concerns itself with prepared dissonances. Students will be taught how to (and given more practice in) distinguishing between sevenths, suspensions, and retardations. They will also learn how to identify 9-8, 7-6, 4-3 (and even 2-3 Bass) suspensions, along with 7-8 and 2-3 Retardations. This project deals first with features of Hindustani Music (Raag sections, etc.) and then moves onto Bhangra (Chaal, Tumbi, etc.). The main task and extension task is designed to explicitly fuse these two styles together in order to deepen and broaden learning. Topics and skills covered include: notation skills; knowledge of instruments; contextual knowledge; how to create ragas with numeric patterns; improvising within a raga; appraising one’s own and others’ work; performing; analysing.

There are up to 3 hours of content in this pack, which covers each of the 6 musical eras of the Western Classical Tradition, a 900-year musical journey! It’s a great introduction to the musical eras and because of the way it is designed and structured, it is also an excellent choice for cover work.
Each of the six musical eras from the Medieval to the 20th-Century has its own reading, writing, and listening activity, with a further True or False activity for Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, and Romantic and 20th Century, to deepen understanding.
While students complete the reading and comprehension activities for each era, there are YouTube links provided to suitable and interesting pieces of music to play in the background, giving students a ‘flavour’ of the era that they are reading about and answering questions about, and a listening sheet to record their observations and opinions for a class discussion at the end of the activity. The links are all checked and are valid as of 28th October 2020. There is also a teacher handout with full instructions as to how to run the lessons, including questions to ask the students, and prompts to remind them of certain things. The great thing about this resource is it is also absolutely perfect for a supply or substitute teacher who has no specialist musical knowledge at all. This resource pack comprises 10 Crossword Puzzles based on general musical knowledge, and they are designed for Years 7 to 9, but can also be used as revision for GCSE/ BTEC music students. Each puzzle has 15 clues to solve and it is expected that students will take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete each one. As such, they work well on an individual basis as Starters, homework tasks, or revision, and can even be used in combination to fill up to 2 complete cover lessons.
Each puzzle has 15 clues, and each clue falls into one of 15 areas: Composers; Countries; Techniques/ Technology; Chords/ Scales; Instruments; Structure/ Form; Genre/ Style; Keys; Tempos; Dynamics/ Articulation; Signs and Symbols; Broadway Musicals; History of Pop Music Singers and Groups; Elements and Eras; Music Theory ‘pot luck’. Since each puzzle contains one clue from each of these 15 areas, they are truly balanced and broad-ranging, making each one great for testing general musical knowledge – not to mention fun!
A full set of answers are provided so that students can self-mark and correct – especially important if you use the activities for cover as you will not want to return to a pile of marking! Feel free to allow students to use the internet to research some of the more tricky clues – independent learning is always beneficial to students.

This substantially resourced pack builds upon prior knowledge of intervals, major and minor scales, including the creation of triads, through a detailed study of the Pentatonic Scale and its modes, alongside the two most common Hexatonic Scales, the Whole Tone Scale and the Blues Scale. It is appropriate for all GCSE Music exam boards, AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and Eduqas, and should take about 2 hours to teach. It may also be used as a bridging topic for A Level Music.

Perfect for Year 7, this project takes students on an exciting journey which begins with the introduction of the Musical Alphabet. From here, they learn how to construct melodies using ordinary words. They are then introduced to simple 3-note chords - again using only the letters of the Musical Alphabet (no sharp or flat symbols, just letters). Students then learn how to match their words with chords, which becomes the basis of a melody with an accompaniment. The next part of the journey is to learn 4 of the basic music symbols and their numeric values in terms of beats (semibreve=4, minim=2, crotchet=1, quaver=1/2). Students group the symbols in a variety of ways so that the combined value is always 4, which creates rhythms. Finally, students are shown how to allocate these rhythms to the words that they have already matched with chords. This creates a rhythmic melody with an accompaniment. The project may end with students (in pairs or small groups) performing their compositions at the piano - a printable ‘note ruler’ is included with the download pack, which fits perfectly over most standard piano keys so that students know which notes to play. They may or may not perform the rhythms correctly, but the composing process, at a basic level, will have been properly learned.
