Introducing cursive writing to years 1 and 2. By the end of the key stage children should be using a consistent legible cursive handwriting style to achieve greater depth. This resource is a good aid for classrooms to support teachers and pupils to remember the joins, and which letters to leave unjoined. The resource is useful for classroom and table top display. It can also be used to introduce all the joins correctly. In year 1 children should be reminded to form each letter correctly, with spacing and correct size. Year 2 should begin to join consistently.

2d shapes Exploring properties of shape with a fun shadow making activity. Children can learn about the properties of regular, simple 2d shapes as well being extended to naming and creating new irregular shapes. The powerpoint demonstrates how to uses torches to create shadow shapes, and differentiated activities allow for children to sort shapes, into different types of tables (e.g carol diagrams and ven diagrams). Relevant questions suitable for testing reasoning about shape can also be found in the powerpoint.

Year 2 tell the time by showing where the hour hand and the minutes hands. Children need to be confident in telling the time before they use this activity. They must understand that the hour hand is the small hand and the long hand is the minutes hand. The resource will enable them to count in fives around the clock and understand how to calculate for example 20 minutes past 9. A differentiated resource for all children to reach the expected standards (S) in maths for the new curriculum.

Year 2 Telling the time to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Children are encouraged to understand what each hand on the clock represents. They move onto telling the time an hour later, hour before, half an later and half an hour before. They look at word problems related to time and work out for example which clock is showing the time one hour after 10.30. They tick the clock that is showing a time in between 3 o’clock and 4 o’clock (e.g a clock face showing 3:15). The work on here is suitable for children working at the expected standard in Maths for year 2. The word problems have challenges for all ability groups including questions to challenge children working at greater depth.

It can be used as and excellent visual aid for a maths meeting wall designed to recap and revise on all the addition, subtraction, division and multiplication taught. Year 2 Writing unit The children can use this resources to research all about the London Olympic Venues and the Torch relay. Children can be given parts of the information to think of their own caption or headings. It will support them to write a non-fiction piece of writing. It can also be used as part of Geography to find out about in London. This unit was written to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in 2012. However, it can still be used to compare changes in local area/London, how Olympics compare, or in general to read around Sports Day.

Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT. Year 2 Reading and Writing- poetry New English Curriculum This fabulous resources has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions. The sound collector has differentiated comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures. There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these, perform them and offer opinions about them. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. They will understand language techniques used by the poet and create their own verse. This resource can also be used as a poetry unit during English main teaching or guided reading. The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles. Year 2 Maths Measures - Reading scales in kg and grams. First, the children have the opportunity to think about the different measures of unit required for different purposes, e.g. measuring height of door, amount of liquid in bath, the length of playground, weight of book etc. They then focus on reading scales for mass and find out how to read scales accurately. Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. An excellent powerpoint with more than 15 slides demonstrates how to write descriptive scenes from the story, a narrative, character traits, and a success ladder. The exemplar text meets the requirements of English New Curriculum objectives. Explicit reference has been made to grammatical features including varying sentence types, conjunctions, words with suffixes, and the use of common exception words. Teachers may use the text in the imitation stage, innovate to where the main character meets a new wild thing, and then invent their own voyage and return narrative. An excellent film and text to use to promote boys writing.

This is a fantastic way to include a dinosaur topic in your English unit. The resource contains an exemplar text (Instructions) with visuals aimed at the Exceeding in EYFS or Working at in year 1. The children are introduced to the story first - Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs. It then leads on to learning instructional exemplar text (imitate) about 'How to take care of a pet dino.' This is supported by a text map to sequence and internalise language. The grammar features included are time connectives and prepositional language. The exemplar text is differentiated for SEN or EAL learners who may have little English, or limited writing ability. The unit lends itself well to imitation, innovation and invention. The children may go onto writing instructions for 'How to care for yourself ' or 'How to get ready in the morning.' They may write instructiins about caring for a class pet. There are lots of opportunities to do cross curricular and independent writing opportunities from this book e.g. my first day shopping. Excellent text for relluctant boy writers. ENJOY.
