Africa Year 2 unit about stories in a cultural setting. If you are looking for a new unit of work with excitement, culture, story, film, art links and research, - then look no further. This is a 3 week unit of work to link with a topic on Africa (or it can be taught stand alone). The planning included opportunities to learn an exemplar rewritten and condensed text using the ‘Masai and I’ story as inspiration. Children have the opportunity to imitate and innovate and then invent their own text. The resources included have excellent visuals to research from. Suitable links to real life Masai have been given as short film extracts to take notes about the cultural lifestyle, food, pets, schools of this tribe. This is an excellent and interesting unit to engage boys. Other links such as art have been made clear - whereby children learn about Kente cloth as worn by people in Kenya, create a traditional necklace and paint Masai dancers. As well as this, a guided reading text has been included in the unit to support reading for ‘working at’. Year 2 English Writing with focus on Traditional stories with a twist. to support reading and writing at the expected level. Can be used as part of the LRRH unit available in the shop or as stand alone with the exemplar provided. Traditional Story with a twist Developing vocabulary in year 2 with the following grammar features; synonyms homophones description expanded noun phrases thoughts, feelings, speech Exemplar text with a traditional story (LRRH), but re-written with a twist is provided. This resources is to be used to encourage development (of good wolf) and develop pupil’s language using a variety of games.

This is a comprehensive list of words with contractions that can be used for classroom display. They in large print and categorised into word families for easy identification around the classroom. This is a useful display for children as they are no longer allowed to be given too much spelling support from the teacher. There are a couple of poems to embed the contracted words that children could use to learn poetry for pleasure. I have found this a invaluable aid to teach spelling to reach the expected standards in English. Suitable for the new curriculum. I hope you found this resource useful as I haven't found anything appropriate for contracted words as yet. I didn't want any more banners and flags in the room. The words are very large but could be made more accessible if photocopied on to A3.

Year 2 English Grammar Expectations within writing An excellent classroom Grammar display for pupils to access throughout their lessons in English. Can be used on teacher’s working wall or on the washing line. The resource supports learning grammar terminology and gives clear examples about the meaning of terminology. There are also examples given in context e.g how to use co-ordinating conjunctions in a sentence that has two independent clauses. Ideally each page should be blown up to A3 size so it is visible to all children. It can also be reduced to have a set on each table for the children to have easy access to. The grammar washing line supports children to edit and evaluate their own work which is part of the standards.

Greater Depth Maths - Year 2 TAF objective- Determine remainders using known facts. This is a greater depth standard, however, the objective has been differentiated so that all the class can access it at their level using visual and scaffolds. HA use known facts to solve remainders MA use multiplication facts of 2x table and division facts LA and SEN use numicon to solve how many 2 numicon can fit into a shape. The children master the objective by demonstrating reasoning and using known facts. 2x 7 = 14 and 2 x 8 = 16 (this is too high because I don’t have 16 socks). So the closest number of pairs is 7. 15 divided by 2 = 7 remainder 1 Suitable for the new maths curriculum. A necessary objective to meet the standards for greater depth and useful to consolidate multiplication and division for working at children. I hope you find it useful. Solving problems with addition to show application of skills. This is a differentiated resources to for children practice adding in different order. They will understand how to apply the skills they have learnt e.g. adding in any order and addition is commutative. Adding three numbers using bonds. Finding different possible answers. Writing a riddle in year 2 is fun. This resource teaches children how to write riddles about snails and whales. It is linked to the story The snail and the whale by Julia Donaldson. This resource is fun and flexible to use. The supporting materials can easily be adapted to write a riddle about any creature. HAPS children are challenged with high expectations by using coordinating conjunction ‘but’ when writing a clue - e.g I have a foot but I don’t have any legs. I’m a good swimmer but I’m not a fish. An excellent, fun and imaginative play linked to the Great Fire of London. It is an end of year Play/Production or Assembly. This play script an be used as a finale to the history topic great fire of London taught in year 2. It is mainly about the historical event although there are other parts with gingerbread men (getting baked in the bakery and 3 little pigs) to give it a modern and contemporary twist (which links to traditional stories with a twist in year 2). The script includes a subtle twist and incorporates characters from fairy tales because traditional stories is also taught in year 2. However, it can be easily adapted if need be to make parts shorter or longer depending on the cohort. It was originally used to cater for a 4 form entry. There are at least 40 speaking parts and other parts for singers and dancers to allow for 120 parts. Again if you are a small school, then all the children can participate in the dances or singing as opposed to small groups. The play is designed so that it can be used in isolation even if you haven’t taught GFOL this year. The resource includes a play script, lyrics for home, links to songs, You tube links with songs, dancing list, costume list, stage directions. All you need to finish of the year after SATs. Enjoy.

KS1 Narrative Unit on Pirates and Mermaids. Year 2 and Year 1 English Curriculum. This has been adapted to suit year 1 children or year 2 children who are working below the expected standard (SEN or EAL). The unit is designed to help children repeat, pre-teach vocabulary, over teach sentence structure, match words, sort sentences into order and sequence, play vocabulary games, and much more. It should allow children for improved independence by the end of the unit. Africa Topic Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters- A play script about an African Tale. Are you learning about Africa? Have you focused on learning a text in a different cultural setting? If so, this is the perfect and inspirational play script for you. It includes parts for 120 (a four form entry school), although this can be easily adapted, altered and edited. The resource includes relevant songs within an African setting including popular and contemporary songs that will add and enliven the show. These have been carefully selected according to the theme in each scene e.g envy, jealousy, beauty, king’s procession etc. There are clear guidance for props, staging and costumes that may be suitable for parents/carers or teachers to provide. English writing unit for year 2 and year 3 This resources supports independent writing of a narrative unit. Children read the book and plan how the main character returns home after learning her lesson about friendship and disloyalty. Children plan, invent and edit in this unit of work. there are lots on visuals and grammar features included to ensure that the Year 2 ITAFS are met. It can be easily adapted for year 3 also. A very entertaining book that will engage all readers. Grammar features include - practicing speech and alternative verbs for said. Practicing using suffix endings -ment, -less, -ness, -er, -est. Pupils write at length and improve stamina for writing. They develop characters and settings through description and dialogue. The story supports pupils to show good v evil characters in their writing.

Year 2 Science Curriculum - Plants This is an interesting lesson demonstrating how to set up an experiment to observe plants growing over time. The P details which vegetables and scraps are suitable to use. It shows how to set up the experiment and includes photographic examples of the scraps that do grow into new plants. Suitable for year 2 and year 1. Children can have fun bringing in scraps from home, such as potato cuttings with a node, carrot heads, celery, spring onion cutting from base, and even a pineapple head etc.

Remote Learning English Writing Tasks This resource has been designed to support parents and teachers because it sets the same task for all pupils for their writing. It is suitable for all pupils across the school and the teachers can vary the success criteria for them. The outcomes will vary according to the age and ability of the child. Pupils can even work together with siblings and share ideas during this difficult times. Year 2 Maths Measures - Reading scales using a thermometer and solving problems with temperature. This activity involves solving problems with temperature, including temperature increase and decrease. The children write a simple equation to show their working out, and then show the answer on the thermometer provided in degrees. Children must have prior knowledge, using and reading a real thermometer e.g to check and read the temperature of indoor space or outdoor space. They should handle thermometers and try to take a reading in different places to see how the temperature drops or increases. This activity supports the new greater depth and mastery curriculum in YR2.
