This is a set of 18 fraction word problems suitable for children in years 3, 4, 5 operating at greater depth and children in year 6 and year 7 operating between age related expectations and greater depth in the national curriculum. I've used it with my year 6 class and even the very brightest children were challenged by some of the questions. These questions are good ways to test if a child is operating at greater depth. This is a fun end of the day activity which can be used for a whole class. The idea is that the children are given the two end words and have to work out which middle (or link) word connects both words to create a new word or phrase. For example: Cauliflower ? Ache ‘Cauliflower blank, blank ache?’ Which word goes in between ‘cauliflower’ and ‘ache’ to make two separate phrases? Solution: Cauliflower Ear Ache This activity encourages the children to think laterally and to draw on their general knowledge to solve the problems.
