What's the point of science?

(1)
Introduction to why science is important. Students have an opportunity to “research” some famous scientists by gathering information from the info in the ppt (can be printed out and used as a resource around the room)

Edexcel introduction to the halogens aimed at Gd 4-6

(0)
Introduction to the halogens good for mid to high set. Includes a starter activity (alkali metals) to get them going then a data analysis exercise where they plot the boiling point of each halogen against its period number (print off the data from the slides and blu tac it on the walls) and then predict the properties of astatine. Also includes the theory behind hydrogen halide formation if you have time.

Oxidation number rules and redox reactions

(0)
Theory lesson suitable for Y12 Chemistry introduction to oxidation number and redox reactions Success criteria are… Identify the difference between oxidation and reduction in terms of electrons Define what a reducing agent/oxidising agent is. Apply the idea of oxidation numbers to unfamiliar compounds Identify oxidation or reduction using occurring in balanced symbol equations Identify oxidising and reducing agents from balanced symbol equations Deduce the type of reaction occurring due to oxidation number change

Edexcel properties of simple covalent molecules foundation Gd1-5

(0)
Lesson focused on the properties of simple covalent properties for foundation tier. Book references in the lesson link to the standard Pearson textbook for combined science. Ends with a true or false quiz and also a "learning log. Starter question is also included. Success Criteria To state the properties of simple covalent molecules To be able to explain why covalent compounds have low melting and boiling points. To be able to explain why simple covalent compounds do not conduct electricity

How negative ions are formed - could be used for any exam board. A couple of old images from “boardworks” have been used to illustrate the concepts. Feel free to adapt for yourself.
