Everything is included (you may want to print the match-up, the match-up activity, and the exit card, but everything else is on the PowerPoint). It is aimed at GCSE Higher students. This lesson was used for an interview at an Ofsted-rated secondary school, and I got the job! A base knowledge of cumulative frequency graphs is needed. The PowerPoint is fully animated. Starter – 10mins Starter task linked to previous learning on cumulative frequency graphs- Students are given a starter on paper- Complete the cumulative frequency graph and find key points from the graph. Lower quartile , median and upper quartile and interquartile range. Examples & teaching – 10-15minutes – 1 min - shares answers to the starter and encourages students to correct if necessary. 3 mins: Show students how cumulative frequency is linked to a box plot drawing. Learning check - Question students if they have seen a box plot, etc. 3 mins—Students completed key info needed to plot a box plot and copied this onto their worksheets. Questioning: Ask students what other information we can get from a box plot, e.g., IQR and Range. Discuss each section being worth 25% of the data. 4 mins: Students complete GCSE question creating box plot from cumulative frequency graph. Mark and correct questioning students. Talk about the slight differences in answers due to the estimates reading off cumulative frequency graphs. 5mins - Examples of how to complete a box plot from a list of numbers and when information is missing. Stretching task – 10-15mins • Students complete the match-up activity in pairs. Encourage conversions. • Support groups that need it as circulating the room. Encourage them to look back at the notes they just made. Plenary 10mins • Students are to complete the exit card under assessment conditions.
