Story Starters - third person - writing
Story Starters for writing lessons in the classroom.
They are all for writing in the third person (ie they all contain the names of other characters, rather than using 'I')
Print these out and laminate them back-to-back. Hand them out (or children can 'lucky-dip'). Students can then choose which story starter interests them the most and use that one to begin writing in their exercise book. Collect them in and use them again another time.

New Zealand Sight Words - FREE- word mats and word cards
Word mats and word cards for words at the Magenta to Orange level of the colour wheel.
Word Mats:
* provided in black/white or with a coloured border.
* one A4 size mat for each level.
Word Cards:
* 5 words on each card for Magenta to Blue.
* 8 words on each card for Green and Orange.
* 4 cards on each A4 size page.
* some words are written twice (just to fill up the last card at that level).
* the cards at each level have the same picture.
* the border and picture colour represent the level of the colour wheel.
* cards are numbered in the top left corner of each card.

New Zealand Essential Spelling Words – Lists 1-4 – Cut, Glue, Trace & Write
Activity sheets for lists 1-4 of the NZCER Essential Words. A great way to reinforce spelling and handwriting at the same time!
110 activity sheets in total.
A5 size (two of the same activity sheet on each A4 size page).
Activities:
♦ write your name at the top of the sheet.
♦ read the word.
♦ cut the letter tiles out and decide which ones you need to keep.
♦ glue the letter tiles in the empty boxes.
♦ trace the word written in the light grey font.
♦ write the word independently.
The lines for writing are 14mm high with a 7mm dashed line.

New Zealand Handwriting Cards - words and place in NZ
New Zealand Handwriting/Printing Copy Cards
The font used is the 'New Zealand Basic Script'. The letter shapes are identical to those recommended in the NZ Ministry of Education Handbook - ‘Teaching Handwriting’.
Students look at the card and copy one line of each letter/word into their exercise book.
The last word on each card is a place in New Zealand. A suggestion is for early finishers to locate the place on a map. If your students have access to the internet they could also research some interesting facts about the place.
26 cards – one for each letter of the alphabet.
A5 size (2 cards per A4 size paper)

New Zealand Sight Words - Graphs
47 graph templates using NZ sight words from the Magenta to Orange levels.
Students circle the words, colour the graph and write the number in the circle below.
A great way to cover literacy and numeracy at the same time.
The graphs progress in difficulty:
At the Magenta level students are only working with a few words on a simple 5x4 graph. By the time they get to Orange, the task has become more challenging with the number of words that they need to plot on a 6x6 graph. For example:
♦ Magenta – 4 different words to graph. 15 words to circle and graph. A maximum number of 5.
♦ Orange - 6 different words to graph. 25 words to circle and graph. A maximum number of 6.

Speaking / Talking resource - 'Talk Time' game for oral language development.
A great activity that supports oral language development.
Toss a coin and then roll a dice to find a topic to talk about.
Talk to a buddy, small group or whole class.
Can you talk continuously for 30 seconds without pausing or saying ummm, ahhhh, etc?
6 charts with 12 topics on each card (72 topics altogether)
1 chart with 12 topics that are broader (suitable for less able students).
Fun, engaging topics that your students will enjoy.
Provided in colour and in black and white.
A blank template is also provided so you and your students can make up your own game.
Also provided is the list of topics that you can print, cut up and put in a container. Students can then pull a topic out from the container (as an alternative to tossing a coin and rolling a dice).

New Zealand Essential Spelling Words - 'Unscramble it' mats
A fun, interactive activity for your students to practise their spelling words.
Print and laminate the mats. Students use alphabet letters such as magnetic letters, scrabble tiles, letters written on milk bottle lids or pieces of card. They gather the letters they need and manipulate them until they see the word.
Words used: NZ Essential Spelling Words lists 1-8 (list 8 = commonly misspelt words).
2 Different Formats:
♦ With a prompt – a dot under the starting letter
♦ Without a prompt

Just print the mats that suit the level of your students:

Answer sheets are not provided. If you can’t work out what the word is (particularly some of the longer words in list 7 and 8) just look at the starting letter and refer to a copy of the essential spelling list.
Please note that when making some of the longer words, the letter tiles will not fit in the allocated space on the page. These longer words will spread out onto the table/floor. Also, there are two words in List one that are only 1 letter long (a and I) so these will not require unscrambling.

Matariki – Haiku Poetry Writing – Make a feather korowai
Celebrate the Māori New Year with this writing/art activity.
Write a haiku poem on the feather template. Add colour and cut it out. Join the class feathers together to make a korowai (Māori cloak).
Included:

The Haiku Poem:
The haiku poem is a simple, 3-line poem that involves counting syllables. The framework is: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables.
Early finishers can use the feather template without the lines to create additional decorative feathers that can then be interspersed between the haiku feathers.

A creative way to present some poetry on war remembrance days such as:

Write the acrostic poem in the square and then cut it out. Fold the pocket template and glue the poem in centre, under the flaps.
