The lesson contains appropriate models, details on the drop-shift-zoom method, watching a news report to develop some literary techniques for our writing and use of colour imagery. Mostly suited to AQA English Language Paper 1 Section B, but definitely could be used universally for any descriptive writing question.

Lesson includes focus on what writing to explain means, what AO5 linguistic devices should be used when writing, how to plan a response and structure ideas, alongside a full mark exemplar response that can be printed and annotated alongside students in order to show them how to embed particular devices into their writing. This is a 6 week SOW comprised of 18 PowerPoint lessons (roughly 100 minutes per lesson). Contains two assessment lessons/opportunities. It teaches narrative writing (aimed at KS3-KS4) and uses the AQA Telling Tales Short Story Anthology to understand key components of narrative writing ahead of the AQA Language GCSE. If you do not have anthologies from AQA, I have found that all stories used in these lessons can be located on genius.com. Stories are read alongside the lessons to aid understanding of narrative writing as well as develop vocab/punctuation etc. SOW contains many independent/paired/group tasks, peer assessment opportunities, annotated exemplar pieces of narrative writing alongside the short stories and delves into many topics. Topics addressed include: Narrative structure Narrative hooks Narrative voice/perspective (including reliable/unreliable narrators) Figurative Language Characterisation Describing Setting ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ Foreboding/Foreshadowing Tone, Mood & Atmosphere Symbolism Metanarratives Plot Twists Suspense/Tension Sentence Structures (and isolated sentences) Narrative Endings & Cliffhangers The SOW also contains punctuation and vocab ‘bites’ which teach varying applicable new vocab and how to use particular punctuation marks for students to embed within their next piece of writing.

Has exemplars of quotes annotated to provide analysis, writing frames for exam style answers and peer assessment opportunities with mark schemes included. Could be split into multiple sessions depending on class. Has a short exemplar descriptive writing piece and task at the end using SOAPAMS techniques and an image - very typical of AQA Language Paper 1. Students can use this as a starting point to then write the remainder of the answer.
