Differentiated long multiplication

(0)

This is a set of resources designed to help students master the skills of multiplication using the traditional column method.

The questions have been designed to help students to gain confidence and understanding by placing digits in circles rather than set out questions from scratch. Each question contains the correct number of circles, the size of each determined by whether it is a main digit or carried digit. I have found a key barrier to students feeling confident with this method is in the manner in which they prepare the layout in the first instance. These resources help guide students through this initial phase.

Each set of guided questions contain examples- allowing them to be completed in lessons or at home.

The following types of questions are included:
2 digits by 1 digit, 3 digits by 1 digit, 4 digits by 1 digit, 2 digits by 2 digits and 3 digits by 2 digits

In addition to guided questions, there are 3 sheets containing practice questions.

This resource is aimed at students in Key Stage 3 but could also be suitable for less-able students in Key Stage 4. The resource consists of 100 general numeracy questions that are intended to be completed without the use of a calculator.

The resource could be used as a starter, plenary or for general practice.

I have included two sets- both with identical questions. The first set contains symbols on some questions that instruct students to write their final answer as a decimal or fraction. The second set does not contain symbols allowing teachers to decide on specific answer formats where appropriate.

I have included the answer to each question.

I will be uploading more sets in the coming weeks.

Differentiated addition (column method)

This is a set of resources designed to help students master the skills of addition using the traditional column method.

In the first sheet, the layout for each question is provided, with the student needing to fill in each circle, the size of each determined by whether it is a main digit or carried digit. I have found a key barrier to students feeling confident with this method is in the manner in which they prepare the layout in the first instance. The first sheet should help guide students through this initial phase.

The second sheet provides 5 sets of questions, each set increasing in difficulty. The layout has not been provided in this sheet. The answers to the questions on the second sheet are provided.
