Language in Transition: Intro Unit

This bundle contains 5 handouts (17 pages in total) and 1 PDF presentation introducing key concepts and theories of language change. It includes:

• A 20-slide presentation on the evolution of English and related theories
• A task sheet with engaging analytical tasks using an extract from ‘Jane Eyre’
• A task sheet on the mechanisms of language change
• Active listening activity on a David Crystal lecture on the effect of technology on language change
• A glossary of key terms
• A handy theory sheet, with a clear explanation of key theories including the substratum theory and the cultural transmission theory.

This is a tried and tested unit and takes approx 5 hours of teaching time.
