Specialist GCSE English Tutor and Examiner (QTS, PGCE, BA Hons) with 5 years experience. I am passionate about making English accessible for all, and for breaking down barriers to learning. My resources reflect this, and have a focus on explaining key terminology, crucial information and ideas in the most simple and straight-forward way possible. As an AQA examiner, most resources have the AQA syllabus in mind, though I will occasionally share Edexcel and Cambridge resources.

Narrative writing lesson plan
Blob tree for starter/plenary assessment
Creating a character handout

This is a thoroughly comprehensive bundle, that can be differentiated for ability ranging from low to high. It is especially formulated with children who find creative writing and thinking difficult.
The key premise for the descriptive lesson is thinking like a writer : allowing yourself time to observe your surroundings, tapping into your sensory experience, and using personal memories as inspiration for description.
The key premise for the narrative lesson is to think character first, not plot first: Using the Henry James technique to uncover a characters inner and outer worlds, experiment with varied sentence starters, and focus on minute detail rather than lengthy overblown plots.
Both also focus on practical time and planning tips for the Paper 1 Question 5 AQA exam.
These lessons have had an incredible success rate with my students. Many have continued to keep a “Sense Diary” in the lead up to their exam and have told me how they were able to use much of this in the actual exam. Students have reported that coming up with ideas, figurative writing and time organisation.

The intention with this pack is to dip in and out: For starters within English lessons, for tutor time, or whole school literacy. Most individual activities will take around 30 minutes, but the whole pack is many hours of work and revision.
I would love to hear what you think of these resources! I have had some excellent lessons from these and continue to love the reaction of students when it “clicks” and the English Language and new complicated words suddenly seem so much less daunting!
An introduction to etymology for KS3 and KS4.
Help to close the word gap by arming students with some basic history of the English Language and some key root words, prefixes and suffixes.
This is one of my most used resources over the last 5 years, and I have had some fantastic feedback from pupils for it! Many will proudly tell me when they’ve spotted root words “in the wild” after this lesson, and it is surprising how engaged they can be to discover this new skill in understanding new words and new texts! It’s like a code being cracked: A great feeling!
A good way to start the term with Year 7 all the way to Year 11!

These shortened practice papers have proved very effective with my students: Purpose built and self-authored to ensure a good range of language devices, writers methods and different perspectives for students to revise their analysis skills for the reading section of the paper.
This pack contains 2 x presentations and 3 x worksheets, specifically designed for students struggling with the concept of figurative language, metaphor and simile. It will cover the definitions of both terms, identifying and distinguishing them, and many opportunities to practice.
