Escape the Capulet’s tomb from Romeo and Juliet! We’ve put together this detailed English lesson that introduces or re-introduces language, structure, stagecraft and genre.
Students work in groups to escape the tomb where Romeo and Juliet die and have to solve numerous puzzles and activities in order to get out.
Using an adventure story theme, this is a brilliant introduction lesson for studying William Shakespeare or first lesson back for all English students whether KS3 or KS4. It is also perfect for the end of term or end of year.

Gothic narrative writing and planning can be tricky, but this lesson support students in effectively planning out characters, protagonists, antagonists, villains, monsters, settings, plot, structure and themes before students write their own Gothic narratives and self-assess their stories through a clearly structured mark scheme. The Porter came up in a Macbeth exam question in 2019 despite having only a few lines in the play, and yet he is an integral character, acting as comic relief and also having a deeper symbolic meaning. In this detailed lesson we explore how and why Shakespeare presented The Porter and how the character links to the Gunpowder Plot and King James I. A fantastic lesson for students of any of the exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and EDUQAS and will help students get ready for English Literature exams.

Romeo and Juliet lesson on Paris. A fully differentiated lesson that analyses Act 3 Scene 4 and Act 3 Scene 5 in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We look at how Paris is reintroduced to the audience, how Romeo and Juliet say good bye to each other, how Juliet reacts to her parents’ decision to marry her off to Paris and their reaction to how she behaves after hearing this news. Designed for AQA English Literature Paper 1 but easily adaptable for other exam boards and for KS3 students, this lesson is definitely worth a download!

In A Christmas Carol we look in detail at the first half of Stave Four; we analyse how The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is presented to Scrooge and the reader, and students work in groups to create their own ghost scenes. Moreover, we look at the different scenes that Scrooge sees and his reactions to each of them, before making predictions about what we think will happen when Scrooge sees the Cratchits once again.A detailed, engaging and fully differentiated lesson.
As we study An Inspector Calls we look at Inspector Goole and how he is introduced to the audience in Act One, analysing Priestley’s stage directions on the character before writing our own analytical paragraphs on the use of language.
