We explore Shakespeare’s The Globe Theatre and think about its layout, its structure, the different sections of the audience and the experience of visiting the theatre during the Elizabethan period. Students use their new knowledge and understanding to write their own diary entries from the viewpoint of a member of the Elizabethan audience. An excellent lesson for studying all Shakespeare texts and a great way of engaging students with historical and social context.
We look at travel writing and reviews and create our own travel reviews using a detailed model and planning sheets. Students look at all the different purposes of a travel review and how a writer is able to combine and order them. Students create their own travel reviews using the models and scaffolds provided. We as study An Inspector Calls we analyse Arthur Birling, the patriarch of the family and a man of considerable power. But does JB Priestley want us to respect Birling or mock him? Is Birling shown as a capitalist or a socialist? What values does he represent? This lesson covers how Birling is presented right up to the introduction of The Inspector in Act One.

As we continue our study of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, we look at what life was like for women in the 1930s and the United States in order to develop a contextual understanding of Curley’s Wife. Includes differentiated activities throughout and helps students to develop their understanding of politics, the patriarchal society, life as a householder, finding work and more. Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers is a classic play about social identity and social injustice and students are introduced to the play by first looking at the musical as a genre before analyzing the context of the play and then beginning to evaluate the types of character within the play based on our understanding of context.
