Key Stage 2 (KS2) area printable activities - fun, strategic games of Four in a Row for consolidation and revision of area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound / composite shapes. Differentiated 3 ways. Originally designed for Y5 and Y6 but it might suit some older groups (KS3) too. In Scotland, use for Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7.
The boards were originally designed to be printed in A3 and I recommend this so that children have sufficient space to record the area of each 2D shape. Taking turns to go, children use a different coloured whiteboard pen to write the area of a shape in the appropriate box on the grid. If using the same colour as their opponent, they could add their initial to the box.
When someone achieves 4 in a row, answers could be checked using the ANSWER GRIDS, or by using a calculator.
1-star version - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. No conversion required.
2-star - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. More challenging calculations. Some conversion required between centimetres, metres etc. Includes decimal lengths and breadths.
3-star - area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound / composite shapes. Some conversion required. Includes decimal lengths and breadths and more challenging calculations. Some of the compound shapes require children to work out the length of a side, using other given sides, before they can work out the area.
Children will be able to do some of the calculations mentally but could work out more challenging ones before writing in the answer on the grid.

Chinese New Year 2024 is celebrated on February 10 (Year of the Dragon) but the earliest the festival, also known as Spring Festival, can fall is January 21. Here are differentiated nonfiction informational text reading passages with comprehension questions, cloze procedure tasks, vocabulary grid puzzles, and direct speech worksheets, designed for upper Primary (Upper KS2 - Years 5 and 6 and equivalents) or early Secondary (KS3 - Year 7 and equivalents). Also available in this money-saving January Reading Comprehensions BUNDLE.
These Chinese New Year themed close reading tasks, puzzles and grammar worksheets are in a printable non-editable PDF file with over 20 pages. UK and US spelling versions are included in separate files within the Zip file to cater for both. All activities are provided at 2 levels of challenge, so will suit a range of year groups and provide appropriate levels of challenge for different abilities within many classes.
I am designing these non-fiction comprehension and activities packets to provide a variety of interesting and relevant texts and related activities, a time-saving bank of flexible themed tasks linked to dates throughout the year. They feature specially written very short texts (about 250 - 300 words). Each pack is linked to a particular month but of course you can use them whenever you want! Each provides comprehension questions, a cloze procedure task and other linked tasks. The other tasks are on aspects of spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, writing or reading (this varies across the different packs). Build all activities into your Literacy or English programme, or use for cover lessons, homework, early finisher tasks or for those busy times when you just need something low-prep, meaningful, relevant and engaging at the last minute!
CONTENTS:
Reading passage (2 levels of difficulty)
Cloze procedure task (2 levels of difficulty) – using same passage
Comprehension questions (2 levels of difficulty) – using same passage
Vocabulary grid puzzle (2 levels of difficulty) – using same passage, student will work on extending vocabulary, while practicing spelling and working on parts of speech knowledge.
Direct speech / punctuating dialogue with speech marks worksheet (2 levels of difficulty) – students punctuate a short passage (more challenging version) or sentences (easier version) of dialogue, that has a link to Chinese New Year. The more challenging version requires students to take a new line for each change of speaker, as well as putting in quotation marks / speech marks etc.

5-rounds of an interactive Picture Grids Game, where teams compete to discover a hidden image while practicing their French vocabulary
A 20-question interactive Multiple Choice Quiz, where students must choose the correct translation of basic sentences linked to the topic
Please note that almost all the text in the PowerPoint is editable, however the other content of the slides is not.
Many slides in the original PowerPoint version feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. Please note that the Hexagons game and Picture Grids game are not compatible with PDF and are therefore omitted from that version. The Multiple Choice Quiz has been left in the PDF version, although it is not interactive in that format.
Also within the Zip file is a PDF of flash cards for places in town, with two on each page.
WORKSHEETS AND PUZZLES
Vocabulary pages: A word mat of French words with images for 30 places in town (also in black and white format) and a 2-page vocabulary list, including key linked phrases. Display or print for students that require them. These pages can also be used as prompts for classroom speaking activities.
7 worksheets, all differentiated at least two ways using a star system. The one-star version is the least challenging, for lower ability, younger or less experienced students. Worksheets 3 and 4 are differentiated 3 ways. Includes jumbled words, translation tasks, a drawing task, and a short reading comprehension.
3 puzzles - There’s a wordsearch, grid puzzle and hidden word puzzle. The first two puzzles are differentiated: the one-star version of the wordsearch gives the start of the French words, while the grid puzzle is included with around half the letters missing, most of the letters missing or all of the letters missing. Accents are not included in the wordsearch.

PRINTABLE GAMES
2 x Four in a Row - 2 different game boards. Print and laminate for repeated use. Ideal for one against one or pairs against pairs. Students roll a dice to select a column, then choose an image from that column to say in French. The first to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins.
“J’ai…qui a…?” Loop Game - A speaking game for groups or the whole class. Print and laminate for repeated use. The 30 cards form a continuous loop so it doesn’t matter which one you start with.
Square Jigsaw Puzzle - Print and laminate the 16-piece puzzle for repeated use or use the additional black and white version on paper for students to cut out themselves before working on it. Students match images to the French words. There’s an extra hidden sentence challenge at the end. Solution included.
“Où Vas-Tu?” Active Oral Game - Card sets included in French and English to cater for different abilities. Print and laminate if you want to use again. 36 cards in the set. Students have one card each and must move around the room, asking “Où Vas-Tu?”, aiming to meet the person with the matching card. Students must reply in French, using the image on their card.
“D’abord…Puis…” Mime Game - A team game where students must perform mimes to make their teammates say the correct French words to match the images on the cards, which the mimer must keep hidden. Teams could play against each other or against a timer to see how many cards they can complete in a certain time. There are 30 cards to be printed (and laminated if you wish to use again and again).

French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 2
French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 3
KS2 Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 maths BUNDLE of printable games and puzzles worksheets for place value. Build number sense with fun activities. The dice games features 4, 5, 6 and 7 digit numbers (thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions) and decimals to 1, 2 and 3 places (tenths, hundredths, thousandths). The puzzles feature 5, 6 and 7 digit numbers. Great for starters, early finisher tasks, extension challenges and homework. All in PDF format. Includes:
17 fun, challenging and strategic games
7 hidden word puzzles
Great for differentiation within the same class or for different year groups
PLACE VALUE GAMES:
Use as printed worksheets or else laminate (or use in dry-wipe sleeves) and complete with whiteboard pens
Instead of playing in pairs, you might form small groups - pairs could play against pairs instead of one-versus-one and you might appoint a checker who can adjudicate (and then swap roles for the next game). Consider enlarging to A3 for larger groups.
There is a mixture of Make the Biggest Number, Make the Smallest Number and Greater or Less Than games
Every turn, players can place the digit they throw on any row or column, until there are no vacant boxes remaining, prolonging the uncertainty! Keeping an eye on each other’s numbers as they form, players will begin to spot new tactics; for instance they might notice that a 1 placed in a thousands place might not be so costly if there’s a 9 in the ten thousands place, depending on what their opponent is doing on their grid. They can also practise saying their completed numbers aloud at the end.
If you don’t have a 0-9 dice, the games still work with a 1-6 dice. Alternatively:
Use 0-9 spinners (I have included black and white and colour templates for your convenience) if you wish to make some
Use digit cards (basic digit cards included in the file)
Use a pack of playing cards (use Aces as 1 and Jacks as 0, put aside the Kings and Queens; shuffle the pack and take one card in turn)
Instructions are printed on the boards.
PLACE VALUE CROSS NUMBER PUZZLES:
2 for numbers up to ten thousands
2 for numbers up to hundred thousands
2 for numbers up to millions
Differentiation: For each of 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers the first puzzle is for practising reading the word version and writing the digit version in the grid, while the second, more challenging puzzle for each involves adding and subtracting from large numbers (increase by 1000, take away five hundred thousand etc)
Works in a similar way to a crossword puzzles but with numbers entered into the grid

Practice slides with digital and analogue clocks
Oral activities using time in context
6 rounds of an interactive Hexagons Game (where teams compete to translate vocab and phrases and make a path through the grid) - includes two rounds where time is to the nearest minute instead of 5 minute intervals, to stretch groups needing more challenge.
16 rounds of an interactive Reveal the Picture Game (where teams compete to remove parts of a grid to reveal the hidden time in the image)
Please note that most of the text in the PowerPoint is editable, however the images are not. Many slides in the original PowerPoint version feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. Please note that the Hexagons and Reveal the Picture games are not compatible with PDF and are therefore omitted from that version.
A PDF file of flashcards / word wall cards for 12-hour time is also included in the Zip file.
FRENCH TELLING THE TIME WORKSHEETS AND PUZZLES:
SUPPORT PAGES: Word mats to display or print for students who require it, for 12 and 24-hour time, and in black and white too. Please note that these support pages are also contained in my printable games packet for this topic.
WORKSHEETS: 10 worksheets (with answer keys), all in both 12 AND 24-hour versions, and all differentiated at least two ways using a star system. The 1-star version is the least challenging, for lower ability, younger or less experienced students and almost all of these focus on quarter hour intervals. Many of the 2-star worksheets are in five minute intervals. For Worksheet 4, the 1-star version is in five minute intervals and the 2-star is to the nearest minute, to provide variety and extra challenge. The two “À quelle heure…?” worksheets (Les Activités / Le Transport) are differentiated 3 ways.
PUZZLES: There’s an airport puzzle, hidden word puzzle, and maze. The airport puzzle is differentiated; the other two are not. The maze also does not have a 24h version.
FRENCH TELLING THE TIME PRINTABLE GAMES:
Four in a Row: There are 4 boards: word version and digital ones for both the 12 and 24-hour clocks. Print and laminate the ones you want for repeated use with dry-wipe markers. Enlarge if using with larger groups. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Dice required.
“J’ai…Qui a…?” Loop Game: A speaking game for groups or the whole class. Print and laminate for repeated use. The 36 cards form a continuous loop so it doesn’t matter which one you start with. There are 3 versions – the first has an analog clock, the second has a digital clock, while the third version features French 24-hour time.
Active Oral Game: Ideal for the whole class. Print and laminate the cards. Students walk around the room, asking and answering what time it is in French, using the time printed on their cards. The first pair to find the matching cards wins. There are 2 versions: an analog clock version for 12-hour time and a digital one you can use for 24-hour time.
Serpents et Echelles Board Game: Print and laminate the board. It works like normal Chutes and Ladders / Snakes and Ladders, only with students calling out French words when they land on them. Answer key included.
Sentences Board Game: Fun for oral practice. Board 1 is a simpler, 12-hour digital version, just in quarter hour intervals. Board 2 is for analog 12-hour time in 5 minute intervals and board 3 is for 24-hour time. Print and laminate. Instructions on board. Answer key included.
Square Jigsaw: Laminate and cut the 16 puzzle pieces or have students cut up the black and white version. For an extra challenge, the letters on the outside edge of the puzzle form a related sentence. 2 versions, one for 12-hour time and one for 24-hour time. Students match analog clocks or digital times with French word version of time.
Counter Throw Time Target Game: Combines math and French! Students throw a counter onto target each round and add elapsed time to their card in a race to finish a 10-step journey in the shortest time. They must read aloud their new time in French at each stage. Black and white target included.
Full game instructions included.

For differentiation, there are additional less / more challenging versions of some puzzles.
Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle any boxes containing errors. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the hidden maths word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. In some puzzles there is an extension question / challenge linked to the hidden word, which in some cases may require a little research if time.
Students often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves.
Thank you for your interest in my resources. I do hope your students enjoy using these puzzles. Please consider giving a review on TES if you get a spare moment. I would be so grateful.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE WRITE AND WIPE TRAILS:
They can be used by individuals or you could have pairs or small groups racing against each other to complete trails accurately. Very flexible and great to have in the classroom all year round to use as a meaningful last minute filler.
Starting at the top illustration and working their way around the card in a spiral, children write the answer to each calculation in the box, creating a running total as they go. The final answer is printed at the end of the trail, beside the illustration in the middle of the card, so they can see if they have correctly completed it. If not, children can check their work to see where they have gone wrong.
Answer cards can be used by the pupils themselves or by the teacher to see at a glance where pupils have gone wrong. Print and laminate if required.
I hope your pupils enjoy using these cards. If you can leave me a review I would be very grateful.

KS2 Analogue to Digital Time puzzle worksheet (converting analogue time to 12 hour digital time) and answer key. This is a free sample from my fun, printable Hidden Word / Spot the Mistake Time puzzles pack. The full pack of 9 puzzles for various time concepts at Upper KS2 (Year 5 / Year 6) and Early KS3 revision is available here – ** Time Puzzle Worksheets**
The full pack also contains puzzles for telling the time to five minutes and nearest minute (analogue), converting between 12 and 24 hour time, converting between units of time (seconds, hours, minutes) and 12 hour time durations / time intervals.
An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, these no-prep puzzles make ideal warm ups, fast finisher activities or homework. They can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. They are similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after the Time work has been completed. Each puzzle contains a grid. Pupils circle any boxes containing errors, then put together the letters from these boxes to reveal the hidden word.
Students often forget or avoid checking their own work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves.
A Mega Bundle of 12 of my hidden word puzzle packs for many maths and numeracy concepts (over 70 puzzle worksheets) is available for a huge saving, while the same puzzle packs are also available in some smaller bundles:

French Basics Revision Worksheets BUNDLE
These are Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 5 and Year 6 (Y5 / Y6) place value printable activities for numbers up to 6 and 7 digit develop understanding of place value, while practising mental maths. There are 72 self-checking maths trails (36 up to 6 digit numbers and 36 up to 7 digit numbers) to make into reusable activity boards or simply print as worksheets (versions also included without the final answer). Ideal as main lesson tasks, starters, early finishers, home learning, homework and revision. PDF format. (In Scotland, this suits Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7.)
A fun activity that can be used as a competitive game or an individual challenge
Differentiation: In addition to there being 2 different levels here (up to 6 or 7 digits), the last 6 trails in each set (trails 31-36) are a little less challenging than the first 30, helping less able students to experience success without drawing attention to the level
Print as many A4 boards as you require (printing on card recommended), laminate for regular use and have students complete trails with whiteboard pens
Consider printing and/or laminating back-to-back to save resources
A5 worksheet versions of the trails (two trails per A4 page) are included with the answer removed, which you might want to use for classwork or homework without laminating
Separate final answer key versions included (for use with worksheet versions)
Full answer versions also included for speedy checking by student or teacher if required
Alternatively students could use a calculator to help them see where they have gone wrong.
Students love using these trails, fixing any errors for themselves. They could work in pairs or individually and choose whether to time themselves or race against their friends.
How do they work? The trails each feature 12 addition and subtraction calculations (practising a variety of vocabulary for the operations) to consolidate place value. A start and end number are printed on each card, so students can work from left to right down the rows, adding and subtracting different size numbers, until they reach the end, where they can check if they arrived at the correct final number.
These trails are available alongside other place value games and activities for large numbers and decimal numbers in a popular bundle:

BINGO / LOTTO:
Includes simple number match and mental maths versions. 2 sets of 6 boards for each of 0-40 and 0-100 – one set features the French number word, the other less challenging version features digits. Print and laminate as required. Both the 0-40 and 0-100 games also have two sets of bingo cards each – French mental maths versions or French number word versions. Great for differentiation - for a medium level of challenge you could have groups using the digit boards with the mental maths calculation cards.
FOUR IN A ROW:
6 French Maths Four in a Row game boards at 2 levels. Great starter, early finisher or group activities for both French and Maths lessons. Most questions can be answered using mental strategies. All four operations used.
4 different game boards for Maths involving numbers from 0 to 100 and generally more challenging Maths questions.
2 different game boards for Maths involving numbers from 0 to 40 with generally simpler Maths questions.
Full answer versions included for at-a-glance checking by students or teacher. BLACK AND WHITE versions of all boards included too.
Laminate and use again. Students work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row. Roll dice to find which column to choose a calculation from (the columns are numbered 1-6). If there are no questions left in the one they've rolled, skip a go or roll again. Use a different coloured whiteboard pen to record answers or add an initial or symbol if using the same colour. I recommend printing in A3 but it will work fine in A4 too.
For the four operations, I use:
plus - add
moins - minus
fois - times
divisé par - divided by
