It can be used as a writing activity or which the word boards as a reading activity. Pupils identify which picture they think is missing by either writing or cover the word on the word boards. There are four sets of puzzles, each set is slightly different. CVCC words have final blend missing and CCV/CCVC are missing the initial blends (words using sets 1-7 letters – orange, words using Phase 3 graphemes – purple) CVCC/CCCVC/CCCVCC are missing both beginning and final and finally the polysyllabic is matching the syllables to the picture.

The idea is that the coloured puzzle piece are sorted by the pictures which has that sound in the word. They then make the sound when put together either using the black and white base or without to make it challenging. Some sounds have word puzzles (__ick, s___t) and may have the same pictures on both letters for that sound.

Colour the words to make the sentence for the picture. Then have a go at writing it underneath. These match the picture and sentence matching. Great to use in class or to send home.

Created as I couldn’t find a mat that had everything I wanted on one mat. This pack Phase 2/3 mats with sounds and pictures as well as lower and upper case letters. It also includes three different font versions: Sassoon Infant, CCW Writing and Dyslexie. The Sassoon Infant and CCW have two versions; one with the HFWs and then the Tricky Words and another where they are in alphabetical order, in colour coded boxes with Tricky Words in bold. The Dyslexie version is slightly different and has a sound mat for Phase 2 and Phase 5 separate and a word mat for each phase including Phase 4 for the HFWs and Tricky Words which can be printed/photocopied on to the back of the sound mats. Includes Phase 2 and 3 sounds, capital letters where appropriate and high frequency words for Phases.
