Pupils practise changing direct speech to reported speech using these differentiated worksheets based on events from the refugee novel Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird. A conversation from Chapter 8 of the novel, when Ayesha escapes from the militiamen with the help of the mysterious old man Abu Boutros, must be changed from direct to reported speech. Direct speech is speech which is reported by using the exact words that the speaker used and includes the use of inverted commas (otherwise known as speech marks or quotation marks). Reported speech (otherwise known as indirect speech) tells you what someone said but does not use the person’s actual words.
