A word bank of 35 common contractions and their full forms. This word list is a useful resource for pupils who are learning about apostrophes and as a word mat when writing non-fiction genres such as diary entries, informal letters and other informal texts, as well as fiction writing, especially dialogue.
Contractions are words that are made by combining two words together but omitting some letters and replacing these with apostrophes.
Each set of words is presented above the shortened form with its apostrophe for omission.

The model recount text is a diary entry written from the point of view of the female protagonist.
The diary comes with a feature find task, which asks pupils to search for the following writing features including figurative language and other literary devices, grammar and punctuation:

A fun speaking and listening game where pupils use food words to sink their opponents’ battleships. This version of the game uses items of food along with numbers, colours and sentence starters.

Useful for cross curricular English and history/science lessons.
Contains the following features: language features such as similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration and rule of three; apostrophes for contraction, singular and plural possession; fronted adverbials followed by commas; time conjunctions; chronological order; paragraphs; fully punctuated speech with inverted commas.
The exemplar text recounting the first Moon landing can be used as a WAGOLL for pupils to examine before writing their own diary text.
