Who fired the first shot at the Battle of Lexington? Was it the British or the Minutemen? To this day it is still hotly debated. In this mock trial activity it puts the minutemen on trial to determine if they shot first. Students will look at three primary sources from conflicting accounts to determine what happened at the Battle of Lexington and to determine if the minutemen are innocent of guilty. What you get in the lesson: Three conflicting primary source accounts of the Battle of Lexington, a guide in how to hold the mock trial, and worksheets that are set up to prepare your students for the mock trial. This packet comes with the Potsdam declaration and follow up questions. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains among the most controversial events in history. It has been debated ever since by historians whether the bombings were necessary, what effect they had on bringing the war with Japan to an end. There were other options that the United States could have used to end the war, but the new super weapon was used not only to end the war with Japan but to show off the new atomic bombs the United States had and to the Soviet Union and other adversaries ushering in the start of the cold war. The Potsdam declaration was signed just a few weeks before the United States dropped the atomic bombs on Japan laying the groundwork for Japans surrender.

In 1872 Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for casting an illegal ballot in the presidential election. She was furious at the injustice and embarked on a speaking tour to push for female voting rights. Below is a speech she gave about the female voting rights issue. The 19th Amendment allowed women to vote in 1920. Susan B. Anthony never paid the fine. In the lesson there is a speech she gave in 1873 explaining why women should have the right to vote. The lesson also comes with follow up questions.
