We've been teaching number bonds for a few weeks now. It makes me nervous to spend so long on a single objective but I am noticing fringe benefits. Obviously, the children are all doing well with their number bonds but they are also using and embedding their understanding of + and = symbols which they now all use without thinking. Also, somewhat subconsciously, they know what addition is. Many children are starting to notice the commutativity of addition and share what they've realised in plenaries. As they have noticed it for themselves, they really get it, which is great. I'll be using the same resources to teach related subtraction facts shortly and I'm hoping all the solid work we've done on number bonds to date will give us a good springboard for subtraction and its relationship to addition. Each word problem is printed on a mini-treasure map and is intended to be stuck in individually so that working out can be shown around the word problem. A range of Carroll Diagrams for the classification and sorting of information. Themes include categories such as odd/even numbers, in the 5 times table/not in the 5 times table which hit multiple maths curriculum targets in one activity. Alternatively, there are cross-curricular and popular culture themes, e.g. animals, Star Wars and Pop Artists. National Curriculum: - interpret and construct simple tables (Year 2) - interpret and present data using tables (Year 3) - identify and describe the properties of 2D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line (Year 2) - identify right angles (Year 3) - recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers (Year 2) - use the language of more than, less than (Year 1)

Children create their own A5-sized 2D shape fact file. They cut out the shape headings, matching shape image and description from the muddled up shapes document and stick it onto blank A4 paper, folded in half. Finally, put all the pages together with the cover pages to create the shape fact file and write a blurb for the back. I originally created this as an independent task for my more able Year 3’s but this would also suit Year 4 children and as revision for upper KS2. This Year 1 unit of maths work is for early on in Year 1. The learning journey focuses on learning to read and write the numbers 1 - 10 in numerals and words as well as counting to 30 forwards and backwards. These numbers are lower than the end of year (EOY) expectations for Year 1 but activities can easily be extended for more able pupils or if you are teaching this unit later in the year. The three menus cover objectives as follows: Menu 1 - - use number bonds within 10. Menu 2 - - use number bonds within 20 - add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0. Menu 3 - - solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? - 9.

Based on the 2016 interim assessment framework for KS1 mathematics, this form provides additional evidencing of the Working Towards criteria for maths. Useful for children who struggle to record their knowledge.

When I use these, I cut them up or get the children to cut them up and stick them in individually, which allows space to show their working and avoids pages full of worksheets glued in. Revise or introduce symmetry in a vertical line with your class using the Return of Frooby story powerpoint. Follow-up the story with some Frooby-themed images for sorting, drawing or describing lines of symmetry. How many different ways can Santa wrap the presents? An investigation for children to find all of the combinations of wrapping paper and ribbon. Differentiated worksheets are included and I used real wrapping paper and ribbon for LA/SEN children.

I put together these revision slides for my less able Year 4s. When it came to maths papers, they persistently forgot 'easy' maths that they could do in class, so we revised them to death with these slides for some easy points on the papers!

Two differentiated Venn Diagrams for use with KS1 children or less able KS2 children. The first sheet sorts on a single criteria (whether the animal is nocturnal or not) and the second sheet sorts on two criteria, with overlap (animals that live on land/water). A number problem for year 1 children to solve involving triangular numbers. We had been looking at different methods the children could use to solve number problems, e.g. drawing diagrams, using apparatus, making playdough models, etc.. They worked in pairs or small groups to encourage them to talk about their approach. The problem is easily differentiated by changing the final number. More able children and those in higher year groups could look at the pattern and think about rules for solving the problem regardless of the number given.

Use number stories to help children visualise or act out a word problem or calculation. These number stories are based around addition and subtraction. Children are first shown a number story and relates it to a calculation as a model. The process is then turned around and scaffolded as the children are given a calculation and supported in making a number story from the calculation given. A set of differentiated number sentences is provided which the children can then use with practical equipment, drawings or writing to tell their own number stories.

A pictorial problem solving activity for year 1 children. Which combinations of animals will give you the number of feet required? How many different ways are there of making a given number? Picture cards provide visual support for the activity.

Some number stories which ask the question - is this addition or subtraction? Pupils need to be able to answer this type of question if they are going to understand and work through mathematical word problems.
