GCSE FRENCH IDIOMS French Speaking Practice Encouraging students to speak can be quite challenging in the languages classroom, and I’ve found that even my more advanced learners can be quite reluctant, especially if the group is fairly large. I use a range of strategies to promote speaking, and idioms, proverbs and fun expressions which sound quite strange when translated literally are really popular - for example, we have regular competitions to see who can get the most idioms or expressions into dialogues and conversations. This works really well for students of all stages and ages. The posters show the literal translation, which generally sounds very odd, such as this particular idiom Revenons à nos moutons ! - Let’s return to our sheep! and the correct corresponding translation. We also discuss other possible translations into English, which helps them understand the concept of translation, and that there are potentially many correct ways of expressing meaning accurately. The posters also lend the learning environment a real French ambiance, promoting the everyday use of French. There are two backgrounds - the French flag looks great, but definitely uses a lot of ink, so you may prefer the poster without a background - this looks just as good! GCSE GERMAN A LEVEL GERMAN ADJECTIVES 34-page written recall workbook featuring 400 German adjectives, English-German, with two written recall challenges. My students find it really useful as a year-round written recall workbook, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. The level is roughly intermediate German preparing to move into advanced German. It's useful for advanced beginner German students to provide a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. It's also useful for intermediate German students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and advanced German students as a vocabulary audit and enrichment. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as the silent ll (groseille) and the use of the plural before a vowel, to show that the***letter s isn’t always silent***, for example les ananas or les olives. There is 1 French to English grid, labelled with a lemon, where learners are prompted with the French words, and look for them in French in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There is also an English to French grid, labelled with a raspberry, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the French equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in French, they also complete the French word list on each page. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginning learners of French. I have a set of 10 differentiated word searches with country, capital city and flag reference list in my store too - the full set description is as follows: Mots cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches with answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 40 countries / territories where French is an official language. The word searches help students***develop their knowledge and awareness of the Francophone world***, and just how widely it is spoken around the globe. I’ve used the definite article for the countries, so that students can see which countries are masculine, and which feminine, which in turn helps consolidate knowledge of gender in French. In Grids 1-4, students search for a particular country. In Grids 5 & 6, they search for a range of capital cities. Grid 7 gives 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid. Similarly, in Grid 8, there are 16 countries given, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid. Grids 9 & 10 show a selection of national flags, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag. There is a single grid per page, A4 (8.5 x 11) portrait format. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Each grid has a corresponding answer key, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional 'vocabulary drilling' exercises. The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Italian-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in Italian. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in Italian. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One: students write the English verbs from an Italian prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Italian-English. Written Recall Challenge Two: again, students write the verbs in English from an Italian prompt, but the Italian verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three: the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding Italian verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It's really useful for spelling in Italian too. We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision. Students also note down any new, related vocabulary, which builds into a really comprehensive high-frequency Italian verb vocabulary bank in a very short space of time. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning long lists of verbs or other vocabulary all at once though: frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. I’ve found this to be a really successful alternative to more formal vocabulary testing.
