This provides an important learning context for students. The quiz opens with general questions about Europe, and then moves on to questions about a range of individual European countries. There are 80 questions across two challenges: Challenge 1: 56 multiple-choice questions, with four response options to choose from. The correct response is in capital letters. Challenge 2: 24 questions in TRUE / FALSE format. Where the answer is false, students should additionally give the correct response. Some of these questions align with the topics / themes in Challenge 1, but some address entirely different ones. I usually work with this challenge after Challenge 1, as I’ve found that it maximises opportunity for learning. In general, sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. The game is ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice - I point out particular phonemes, sounds and accents too - such as the silent x on the plural of cheval : chevaux, and this is really useful at ***consolidating accurate French pronunciation. The longer and more complex sentences really help students focus on reading out loud accurately, and think more carefully about language, and how to pronounce it correctly. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as singular and plural, adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun, which can differ from language to language: I’ve found this is really useful for students who may be learning more than one language at a particular time. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their core Spanish verbs vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write activities have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from a Spanish prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Spanish-English. Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from a Spanish prompt, but the Spanish verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding Spanish verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. I let my students work with them independently at frequent intervals, both during the introduction phase, and regularly afterwards, giving them maximum opportunity to consolidate the vocab. They like to create game/quiz cards for each other with the card template. The vocabulary groups are: = les pays = les nombres 61-80 = Quelle heure est-il ? (o’clock) = les adjectifs = la nourriture et les boissons = conversation There’s a reference workbook too - my students always benefit from the chance to write out vocabulary, which helps them practise and embed the vocab - there are 3 differentiated recall and write challenges, with an alphabetical French-English reference list - we use this as a year-round reference resource as well. Written Recall Challenge One: students write the English word /phrase from a French prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category Written Recall Challenge Two: with this challenge, students write the words/phrases in French from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category Written Recall Challenge Three: this final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from French to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category - I’ve found that this really does encourage my students to think hard about their French vocab.
