Scientists Protecting the public revision (OCR A4)
Key ideas match up activity (descriptions with pictures) for lower ability classes. Eg colorimeter, light microscope, chromatography.
Could then be followed by the cloze worksheet (answers provided).
It doesn't cover everything in A4 in detail but could be useful part of a revision lesson.
OCR AS Biology silent debate on biodiversity
Relates to specification points :
"The factors affecting biodiversity" and "the ecological, economic and aesthetic reasons for maintaining biodiversity"
Print off the statements and stick onto centre of large piece of paper. Students move between each piece of paper, adding their comments or questions about each statement - in silence. After a certain amount of time they are then allowed to comment on each other's comments. The teacher could get involved too. For more details search internet for 'silent debate'.
Invertebrates and Vertebrates review quiz (Microsoft Forms)
Designed as a review quiz which could be done for homework or in class (on own devices or in an IT room). I have a feeling you can only access and edit if you have a Microsoft account though.

B7 Ideas in Context 2012
Some possible questions for the Ideas in Context section on 'Alien Invaders&'. I&';m afraid I've only done it quickly so it&'s not an exhaustive list of Qs. ***NEW - some answers now available on the powerpoint***
A Level Biology maths skills checklist
Upload this to Google Drive or similar, convert into 'sheets' and then share the link with your students, checking you have ticked the 'allow edit' box.
They then go online and red, amber, green each of the skills to give you and them an idea of any gaps in knowledge and trouble spots. It could also be used to highlight 'experts' on a particular skill. The document saves automatically and can be locked, or reviewed again at a later date.
Possible drawback, depending on your point of view, is that they can see each other's self-assessment.
I've also made a similar one based on the content in the specification, but it was based on a pixl sheet. I'm sure you could do something similar!
KS3 Digestion and nutrition revision cards
Students struggle to revise well so I thought I’d make a template for them to make some revision cards. Not particularly revolutionary but if it saves you a job it’s worth it!
Also has some photos of example revision cards on the second page.
Print out for them on card (or get them to do it themselves on paper) and they follow the cues at the top of each card to help them revise all the relevant information.
Once they’ve done this a couple of times they should then hopefully get better at making their own revision resources.
B7 6 mark questions (New OCR 21st C)
A few possible questions. I printed these on to A3 paper with the right hand side blank for planning answers e.g. writing keywords and analysis of the question.
There is also a poor quality exemplar answer which the students can analyse and try to improve on.
Sorry, no mark schemes.
Can be done in groups, pairs or individually.
Healthy diet / nutrients research grid
Students research details about the 7 nutrients and a few specific vitamins and minerals. I did it with top set Year 9s doing edexcel iGCSE. The grey boxes don’t need filling in.
Answer sheet included.
Blood - components and functions
Powerpoint and hand out for students to fill in about the components of the blood, functions and a bit about blood donation for extension.
Originally produced for teaching edexcel iGCSE but fully editable for use with all exam boards. Includes a link to a kahoot quiz.
Activity sheet on Haemoglobin (AQA)
Activity / revision mat about haemoglobin based on AQA past paper questions. Also links in a little bit with protein structure and touches on phylogeny.
Answers included.
Skeleton movement and joints revision mat
Revision mat template for skeleton movement and joints.
You may want to edit the ‘5 functions’ of the skeleton depending on what you’ve taught previously.
We include: movement, making blood cells, protection, shape and support, and storage of minerals.
A Level Biology Assessment objectives
Here’s a poster, best printed A3, to help your students remember that there’s more to passing the exams than just recall of facts. You could also print smaller copies for their files etc.
Original powerpoint file also included in case you want to edit it.
GCSE genetic modification revision poster for iGCSE Edexcel
Basic template to review or revise genetic modification for Edexcel iGCSE. I’ve also added a bit about the ethics to think about.
Placenta and Amniotic sac (Edexcel iGCSE)
An information sheet and question sheet for a bit of independent work on the roles of the placenta and amniotic sac for edexcel iGCSE. We do this in Year 11 so there are a few synoptic quesitons in there too such as “describe the role of antibodies”, “describe how the mother gets rid of the foetal carbon dioxide”.
Feel free to use this Quizizz quiz too: https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/5bedc6df007091001a7aed67
What plants do with glucose DART
Activity for students to learn about what plants do with the glucose they make in photosynthesis. Aimed at GCSE (specifically iGCSE Edexcel) as I’ve tried to link it in with the topic they’ve already done on biomolecules and obviously cell structure.
DART stands for Directed Activity Related to Text. It could be used in many ways. For example students read once and highlight in one colour all the chemicals that are mentioned. And then read again and highlight in another colour what they need the various chemicals for.
Then they use this information to create a spider diagram, with little picture, to help them remember the information.
Greenhouse gases for Edexcel iGCSE - Spot the Mistakes
Spot the mistakes reading activity with answers.
Specifically designed for the Edexcel iGCSE specification which requires them to know that CFCs can also act as greenhouse gases.
Coronavirus outbreak facts, slides and questions
** UPDATED 03/03/20 **
A starting point for talking about the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus outbreak including facts, pictures and ideas for questions and discussions. Could be used when discussing infectious diseases, viral structure, vaccines, clinical trials, PCR etc.
Up to date as of 03-03-20
Made in google slides but hopefully has been translated into Powerpoint ok.
B6 revision questions and answers (21st century Brain and Mind)
Here are 35, mostly short answer questions that can be used for various quiz formats or as a written task.
I use them with the buzzer powerpoint which is basically a slide with 2 pictures of a buzzer on that when tapped make a funny noise (it's not amazing so suggested improvements are welcome!).
2 pupils come to the IWB and a quiz master reads a question from the list. Whoever buzzes first correctly gets to stay at the board, and the other one has to sit down and someone else takes their place (winner stays on).
The questions are probably more suitable for higher students.
Cardiac cycle flip book
Pupils must arrange the ‘slides’ in the correct order, then they can staple them together to make a flip-book. They should also write a sentence to explain the main events. Also comes with answer sheet.
Ecology reading exercise - Australian fires
A reading activity for reviewing or revising ecological concepts for A Level Biology in the context of the 2019/20 Australian bushfires.
Some short answer questions to test understanding of keywords and concepts followed by some questions which could be used for class discussion or set as a group exercise.
Also includes links to other articles to read and a short video to watch.
