Brecon Beacons Mapping Exercise

(1)
The activities are based on the 1:25000 OS Explorer Map OL12 map of the Central Beacons but the exercise is adaptable to other OS maps. It aims to develop an enjoyment in map reading by making an area ‘come alive’. Students find map locations of different human activities from written descriptions. An aerial photograph helps in a decision-making activity based on the people ‘in the map’. The completion of the activities by small groups enables the development of discussion skills. There is opportunity for literacy skills if written work is completed.

This lesson explores the features of written instructions including the use of time words to help indicate an order and the use of action words. Pupils have the chance to follow instructions and develop their own. The lesson could be used during a unit of work on writing, especially one that explores writing for purpose. Use of the whiteboard tools (eg pen, highlighter) would also enable the teacher to address other associated word-level work.

This innovative resource uses the 'Rocket Science' theme to develop investigative skills through a variety of Science topics. The students are encouraged to think critically and develop a curiosity for their learning that spans beyond the traditional and sometimes rigid division of Science into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This approach allows the learners to tackle problems from a wider range of disciplines and skills and encourages them to see the big picture. A series of resources supporting the teaching of Crime and Deviance. The units deal with the nature and definition of crime and deviance and lead to an open debate as to the nature of social control in our society. The third unit explores labelling theories of criminal behaviour and the final unit encourages learners to think about the value and accuracy of official statistics on crime by exploring the reasons people have for reporting and not reporting crime to the police.
