Also a simplified explanation of how banks use Prime numbers. There is a link in the plenary that shows (at least for my classroom PC!) that computers find it hard to break down even numbers with 8+ digits, never mind 200!) As with Chris Smith's group challenges, we have also built his Maths relays (https://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/maths-relay-races-problem-solving-puzzles-6064073) into our Y7 scheme of work. They have proven to be very popular with the pupils, and we therefore needed some for Y8 as well - so I made some! The instructions give a few ideas that make these run more smoothly! Pupils learn about plan, front and side elevations and how to draw objects on isometric paper. The worksheet has an investigation into making objects with 5 cubes, as well as some challenging questions on building objects based on their elevations, with as few cubes as possible. Please note that the questions in Section B and the 'impossible shapes to make' are not my own and have been taken from other sheets found online. Pupils imagine they are a secret agent. They have to get across each map without being detected by guards or security cameras. IMPORTANT NOTE: When the pupils start the task, say that the task is to show the areas which are UNSAFE. If you say they need to find a safe route through, they will all just estimate it without using the Loci!

Pupils will end up with a reflected pattern in their grid and as an extension you can ask them to try and draw flow diagrams (I have referenced the source for these (davecavill - also on the TES site) in the powerpoint itself!) 4 lessons taking students through processes required to understand the Mandelbrot set and fractals. Students should already know how to simplify surds and expand a double bracket. They will learn about imaginary and complex numbers, Iteration and Argand diagrams. The spreadsheet can be used to help map out points that satisfy the Mandelbrot set.
