Inequality Graphs

(143)
2 Lessons, one on drawing graphs to show regions that satisfy 1 or more Inequalities. The second is in reverse, being given a region and identifying which Inequalities satisfy it. Includes sheets that go with the lessons. The pupils will need to have covered the equation of a straight line in order to do lesson 2. Planning Flights
Owen134866Owen134866

Planning Flights

(27)
This is based on something I saw on the TES a while ago, but I couldn't find it again! The pupils have to plan flights on various continents using Bearings to work out the direction of travel, and Speed, Distance and Time calculations. There is a worksheet with choices of continents as well as a sheet of estimated answers! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Linear Programming
Owen134866Owen134866

Linear Programming

(25)
2 powerpoints to help with the teaching of Linear programming. They contain starters, main activities and plenaries, and have been made to go with the Cambridge IGCSE course and textbook. Of course they could be adapted though! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Geometrical Square Rooting
Owen134866Owen134866

Geometrical Square Rooting

(20)
Pupils learn how to estimate square roots of numbers using only a pencil, ruler and a pair of compasses. Originally discovered by Rene Descartes, it is based around Pythagoras' Theorem (a proof is included in the powerpoint). If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Puzzle of the Week
Owen134866Owen134866

Puzzle of the Week

(20)
Each of these documents contains 30 puzzles which I have used over 3 academic years as 'puzzle of the week&'. I have a folder on the wall and pupils help themselves to printouts and they hand them into a box in my room, receiving merits for correct answers. Many of the puzzles are not necessarily my own work, just things I have found over the years! Its worth mentioning that they aren&';t all Maths-based, although most are... If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :) EDIT: 1/12/14 Added year 3!
How many Quadrilaterals?

How many Quadrilaterals?

(17)
I made this based on something I found in my old Maths books from school. As it happens there is also a Boardworks slide which does this really well too. Pupils have to make as many Quadrilaterals as they can by joining points on a 3x3 grid. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!

Pythagoras Theorem and Coordinates

(11)
Lesson on using Pythagoras' Theorem to find the distance between coordinates. Includes quite a few extended and reversed questions and should be challenging for pupils. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)

Even more Maths Relays!

(9)
Another set of 5 relays, this time aimed at Y9 students. Also included is an example of how I use them and a scoring sheet. Most of the questions have been pilfered from nRich or the UKMT, so are not my own work... If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/Owen134866 The relays are originally based on Chris Smith's set, uploaded here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/maths-relay-races-problem-solving-puzzles-6064073 And my other set of 5 is here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/more-maths-relays-11026512
Which gives the biggest answer?
Owen134866Owen134866

Which gives the biggest answer?

(8)
Students have to try and work out which expression will give the biggest answer when a value for x is substituted in. Of course, it isn't that simple and they find that the answer varies depending on the value used. It is a good opportunity for them to consider how drawing graphs can help find whereabouts solutions might lie. I have also included some blank autograph axes which can be used to plot the graphs more dynamically and find what regions are highest for each. Extension questions could include finding expressions where one is always bigger, one which is higher above a specific value for x etc. Lots of opportunity for extension - students could also use Autograph themselves to experiment! Generating and Graphing Sequences
Owen134866Owen134866

Generating and Graphing Sequences

(7)
These 3 lessons are aimed at higher ability pupils who have covered linear sequences before, and need a quick recap but then an extension into harder work. Lesson 1 - Generating much more complicated sequences and finding patterns in the differences. Lesson 2 - Using the patterns they found to work out the nth term of quadratics/cubics etc. Lesson 3 - Graphing the sequences and their differences and finding links between them. Who wins the Heptathlon?
Owen134866Owen134866

Who wins the Heptathlon?

(7)
Lesson on the official formulae used to calculate the amount of points athletes get for different events of the Heptathlon. An important part is the discussion afterwards as to whether the scoring system is fair or not (an article is linked in the powerpoint) If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Changing the subject
Owen134866Owen134866

Changing the subject

(7)
These two powerpoints go through the basics of changing the subject of an equation or formula. The first includes just simple linear rearrangement, and the second includes example of factorising and dealing with roots and fractions. Nothing especially exciting, just trying to be as clear as possible! If you liked this resource, then please check out my other stuff on TES! https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/Owen134866
Perimeter of unfolded shapes
Owen134866Owen134866

Perimeter of unfolded shapes

(6)
I have a shape, created by folding another shape in half. What could the original shape have been? Lots of questions on this idea (you have to look at it to properly understand what it is all about!). You will need to write on the powerpoint in the plenary... Thanks to Fred Angus for originally giving me the idea! If you like this then please check out my other stuff on TES (all on my profile!) :)
Pick's Theorem
Owen134866Owen134866

Pick's Theorem

(6)
All you need for an investigation into Pick's theorem, linking the dots on the perimeter of a shape and the dots inside it to it's area (when drawn on square dotty paper!) You will need to write on a few of the slides. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! :)
