Flags Game: KS3 / KS4 maths number activity

(0)
This game is good for end of term lessons. You split the class into teams (3-4 works best). You roll 3 dice for each team and they have to use the numbers however they want (including as indices or factorials) to make numbers from 1-64. Points are awarded as explained in the powerpoint. It works best if you roll the dice for all teams to start with and roll after their go, that way they can think about what number to make while you go round the other teams. It might take a bit of practice to get then hang of this but pretty much every class I've played it with loves it!
Geometrical Square Rooting

Geometrical Square Rooting

(20)
Pupils learn how to estimate square roots of numbers using only a pencil, ruler and a pair of compasses. Originally discovered by Rene Descartes, it is based around Pythagoras' Theorem (a proof is included in the powerpoint). If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Algebraic Areas

Algebraic Areas

(4)
Pupils get shown several shapes which are to be represented by letters. They then have to state the areas of some compound shapes algebraically, which are made up of the original ones. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
The Konigsberg Problem
Owen134866Owen134866

The Konigsberg Problem

(6)
An investigation into traversable networks, centred around solving the Konigsberg problem. Pupils decide whether a number of networks are traversable or not and then look for patterns in their results. Includes everything you need to just do the lesson! If you like this please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Perimeter of unfolded shapes

Perimeter of unfolded shapes

(6)
I have a shape, created by folding another shape in half. What could the original shape have been? Lots of questions on this idea (you have to look at it to properly understand what it is all about!). You will need to write on the powerpoint in the plenary... Thanks to Fred Angus for originally giving me the idea! If you like this then please check out my other stuff on TES (all on my profile!) :)
Pick's Theorem

Pick's Theorem

(6)
All you need for an investigation into Pick's theorem, linking the dots on the perimeter of a shape and the dots inside it to it's area (when drawn on square dotty paper!) You will need to write on a few of the slides. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! :)
Coin Investigation

Coin Investigation

(0)
I think I originally saw this idea on the TES website, but I can't remember where! Pupils investigate what amounts of money can be made with one of each coin up to a 50p piece. They can then investigate what extra coins they would need to make all the amounts up to 99p. There is also an extra extension where they can try to find a more effective coinage system for this! Quadratic Pythagoras' Theorem

Quadratic Pythagoras' Theorem

(3)
Lesson on using the Quadratic formula with Pythagoras' Theorem to answer questions involving right-angled triangles with all sides unknown, but with information linking them. Will probably challenge even the most able of GCSE students! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Diophantus' Triples
Owen134866Owen134866

Diophantus' Triples

(3)
A lesson on the rules Diophantus came up with to create Pythagorean Triples. The main challenge is for higher ability pupils to prove why his method works using algebra. Weaker higher level pupils should still be able to do the numerical version though, and possibly start on the algebraic one... If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Forming and Solving Equations

Forming and Solving Equations

(100)
Pupils create equations from worded scenarios. The Powerpoint has a number of examples to use which you will need to write on, as well as a starter, plenary and worksheet with answers! :) If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Mean from a Table
Owen134866Owen134866

Mean from a Table

(15)
Ready-to-go lesson on calculating the mean from a table. With weaker groups it is very important to explain exactly what the numbers in a table represent first! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Make 50!
Owen134866Owen134866

Make 50!

(4)
Pupils have to make the numbers from 1-50 using 1, 2, 3, and 4 once each only. They can use any operations as well as indices and factorials. Includes a sheet of possible answers! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Equations involving X Squared
Owen134866Owen134866

Equations involving X Squared

(5)
Lesson on solving equations with an x squared term in. However, these do not also contain an x term meaning they do not need to be solved by factorisation. The idea is that pupils practise solving these as they would a linear equation, but appreciate the possibility of more than 1 answer when they square root. Using one graph to solve another
Owen134866Owen134866

Using one graph to solve another

(44)
This is a topic that is quite hard to explain but hopefully this 2 lesson sequence will help. Pupils should already know how to plot linear and quadratic graphs and this builds up to using the graph of one equation to solve a different one. Everything needed is here but you will need to write on the powerpoint in parts. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Formulae from Dotted Sequences
Owen134866Owen134866

Formulae from Dotted Sequences

(3)
I had an idea like this a while ago but recently saw it again in a magazine so I decided to put it together as a lesson in my usual way. Pupils find formulae for quadratic sequences by considering patterns of dots and their shapes, rather than the actual numbers involved. There is a second lesson here as well where they can work backwards and create patterns of dots that fit a given formula... If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
How many Quadrilaterals?
Owen134866Owen134866

How many Quadrilaterals?

(17)
I made this based on something I found in my old Maths books from school. As it happens there is also a Boardworks slide which does this really well too. Pupils have to make as many Quadrilaterals as they can by joining points on a 3x3 grid. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Scatter Graphs
Owen134866Owen134866

Scatter Graphs

(40)
Powerpoint and worksheet on plotting Scatter Graphs, identifying correlation and using lines of best fit. The data on the sheet has come from somewhere else but I'm not sure exactly where from! You will need to write over some of the slides... If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
