A fast-paced, pupil-led lesson with varied activities and integrated (graded) peer assessment. Worksheets are provided for differentiation of the task and a full lesson plan shows details of all activities (although the PPT is very straightforward anyway).

A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson. Objective (A03): Grade 3: Make obvious point of comparison. Make simple comments on writers’ ideas and view points. Level 4: As above and makes some specific references to theme, language and structure. Level 5: Discusses a range of comparisons in some detail. Explains the writers’ ideas and viewpoints with quotations to support. Pupils complete a series of activities to build a framework to asses both poems. They then complete an analysis framework sheet and a series of P.E.E paragraphs (with a support sheet for LA pupils).

This includes: a two page guide on how to structure a commentary (including key questions to promote individual analysis); an assessment task where examples of varying grades have been given and pupils have to allocate grades using the marking criteria and self assessment grid to ensure all of the basic frameworks of language have been covered. It is ideally given to pupils before writing their original piece to keep the commentary in mind throughout. An excellent tool to improve students grades with independent study.

A full lesson designed to encourage pupils to question their perception of animals, investigate the meaning behind famous fables and investigate and discuss the morals associated with fables. Differentiation is outlined in the lesson plan. All tasks are pupil-led and fast-paced, including a video resource and plenty of visual stimulus for those harder to engage pupils.

A full lesson (lesson 6 in SOW) investigating the format of a newspaper article and persuasive features. There is an initial comprehension activity (looking at two different articles) which is done in pairs or small groups and then a creative writing task whereby pupils are provided with a worksheet to promote the organisation of their articles. A full lesson outlining how to investigate the denotation and connotation of imagery and structure. The lesson involves a group starter task identifying the connotations of colours. They then complete a series of individual comprehension questions which aim to promote pupils' confidence and ability identifying the connotation or the writer's choice of words, before a peer assessment task. Pupils have GCSE 1-9 criteria to assess their work. There is also a homework task (or extension task) to encourage further development.
