Hallowe'en Reading, SPaG & Writing (KS2)

(0)
This is one of a series of short reading passages written for Lower KS2. It is followed by a mini- comprehension task where pupils have to choose which of three statements is true . There is a SPaG exercise linked to the passage. The final activity is extended writing. The text is a bit PC - no plastic in costumes, and no traipsing around streets threatening old folk or begging for sweets!

SPaG: Vocative Commas Lesson (commas for addressing)

A lesson on vocative commas (commas used for addressing). Included are complete lesson plan,Powerpoint presentation, sentence making exercise for pupils, plus a blank version for early finishers. The lesson would be a good follow on to a Commas for Lists lesson, and is probably suitable for KS2

English Sentence Punctuation: PowerPoint Presentation

For KS1 and lower KS2. Many children forget about capital letters at the beginning of sentences when they are concentrating on the ideas in their writing, or simply trying to write quickly. This presentation is simply a reminder - with examples - of the rules. The examples are introduced one by one, so could be used by teachers as a written exercise, dictating each sentence before showing it on screen.

Proof-reading practice for Y5-8 to improve pupils' SPAG skills and increase the accuracy of their writing. A PDF presentation for the whiteboard. Five 15 minute exercises, each consisting of sentences with errors of punctuation, spelling, grammar or usage. Pupils write out each sentence correctly, underlining the correction they have made.

Spelling rules for words containing the letter 'L'..

PDF presentation covering rules for adding suffixes to words ending in 'l', 'le'. Spelling rules for adverbs, for words ending in -'ful', changing 'y' to 'i'... More than a single lesson starter - I would focus on one slide a day and build it into a unit of work over a week or so. The complete presentation could also be used as a revision session.

For complete beginners who are learning to read French. A two slide presentation where pupils have to spot words with silent 'e' endings and write them down. Good for a quick starter.

French Pronunciation: Differentiating between the sounds é and è

Many students are not aware of the difference that acute and grave accents make to pronunciation. This resource was created to help remedy that. It consists of a timed Hotpot activity where players have to identify long and short ‘e’. A link at the top of the page takes them to a website where rules of pronunciation are explained.

Weekly Writing Focus

Presentation consisting of 77 slides with suggestions for weekly writing topics throughout the school year. Ideal for whole school, or multi-class writing. A daily session of 15 minutes plus an extended session at the end of the week or for homework, should give pupils time to work on the quality of their final pieces.
