Lesson objective: To solve problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities where missing values can be found by using integer multiplication and division facts.
In this lesson, students will be introduced to ratio and proportion and it will be explained that ratio shows the relative sizes of two or more values and proportion is a part, share, or number in relation to the whole.
Through an engaging powerpoint they will first learn how ratio and proportion are used in real-life contexts and will begin to write the ratio and proportion of shaded parts of shapes/ objects. They will have a go at differentiated questions before moving onto the differentiated activity sheets. 3 levels of challenge and provided along with the answer sheets.

In this lesson, students will be taught how to identify the rule of a number sequence. They will then complete a range of problems which require them to identify and generate their own number sequences by finding the rule in one and two-step equations.

In this lesson, students will learn what dissolving is including terminology such as solution, solute and solvent. They will learn how to differentiate between dissolving and melting and will complete a quiz on what they have learnt.

At its height, the Roman Empire ruled over much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. In this lesson, students will investigate how the Roman Empire finally fell. They will learn what an ‘empire’ is. How far the Roman Empire spread, where it covered at its peak and the events that led to its fall.
As an activity they will complete questions on the text read and plot the events of the fall on a timeline. They will also write a script to serve as the commentary to the video clip of Rome’s rise and fall.
This lesson is intended for KS2 students but can easily be modified to suit KS3.

A mechanism is a device which takes an input motion or force, and outputs a different motion and force.
In this lesson, students will learn about different mechanisms such as pulleys, gears and levers. They will see how each works in everyday life and learn the science behind them. They will be asked to identify which mechanism from the images and will complete a quiz mid-way through to check understanding.
They will then carry out an experiment creating their own levers before designing their own machines using what they have learnt. The activity sheets are provided which guide them through this process.

Free verse is an open form of poetry, which in its modern form arose through the French vers libre form. It does not use consistent metre patterns, rhyme, or any musical pattern. It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.
In this lesson, Children learn what free verse poetry is and how poems are structured. They look at example free verse poetry and identify repetition, rhythm, stanzas and how imagery is created. They then have a go writing their own free verse poem as a cold task based on an image using the scaffold provided.
This lesson is the first in a 6 lesson sequence covering two weeks of teaching.

Lesson objective: To compare and classify geometric shapes based on their properties and sizes and find unknown angles in any triangles.
In this lessson, students will recap 2d shapes and their properties such as lines of symmetry and parallel lines. They will look closely at the different types of triangles and will play ‘Who am I?’ guessing the different shapes. They will then learn how to calculate missing angles in triangles and to consider the properties of the different triangles when doing so.
3 levels of differentiated activity sheets are then provided as well as answer sheets.

This sequence of lessons studying newspaper reports is based around the theme of Space. It looks at a model text about Tim Peake’s journey to space and over two weeks teaches students how to structure a newspaper report part by part.
Each lesson comes with an engaging powerpoint presentation and all relevant material. Included is a unit planning overview so you can see how the lessons progress. At the end of the unit, the children are tasked to write their own newspaper reports using the techniques they have learnt.

This lesson focuses on supporting the planning and writing of Free Verse Poetry. It comes with an engaging powerpoint presentation and a possible planning template.
Pupils review imagery and the poetic devices used to create it. They complete a matching activity for this. They then find their own image as a stimulus for their poems and write down related words and phrases. A planning frame is also given for the children to use to structure their ideas. Pupils use their planning frame to write their own free verse poems. Possible starters are given as well as a brief checklist of things to remember. Pupils look back at their poems and with feedback from the teacher and their partner, they edit and improve them. Pupils learn their poems off-by-heart and perform them considering rhythm, volume and expression.

Similes are a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ).
This lesson focuses on using similes in Imagery/ Free Verse poetry. It comes with an engaging powerpoint presentation, lesson plan and activity sheets.
Children first revisit imagery before looking at the language structure of similes. They listen to a poem which uses similes and discuss the effect of the similes used. They then work in pairs/ small groups to read a number of poems identifying the use of similes and how they are used. They then write their own similes for the pictures given. As a class then complete a modelled write, taking words and phrases from the children to create a stanza/verse of a poem based on the image. The children then write an additional stanza to the poem independently making use of similes for effect.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a children’s fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is set within Tolkien’s fictional universe and follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins, the titular hobbit.
This lesson looks at describing the character of Bilbo Baggins. It teaches how to describe characters according to their appearance, personality, behaviour and any special traits or interests.
Students look at a number of example extracts and are asked to highlight these examples before planning and writing their own character description using the planning frame provided.
