Probability True False Expectation Calculation Estimation Mr Wrong Activity Misconception Assessment

This is a top idea which I've used many times and I think it really does provide some great discussion. The probability of it snowing tomorrow is not 1/2 as it doesn't snow very often. However students often think that as the choice is either "snow" or "not snow" so the chance of it snowing must be a half. The activities here are designed to address this misconception. Originally I used this as a short 10 minute activity as part of a whole lesson of many circus activities (many other of my circus activities are listed on TES resources) however you can easily build a whole lesson around it. The activity has nine discussion questions to decide if they are true or false. The PowerPoint is simply those questions so that you can display them to discuss them as a class. The WS is good for a homework or as a classwork exercise to get something in the book. Alternatively you could simply ask them to choose one of the questions to write into their books and then describe in detail the answer. The Mr Wrong questions are useful as starters next lesson or plenaries today. You could easily amend the questions within in them to suit the point you are trying to make with your learners. The label is obvious. The A5 asks the student to choose which Mr Wrong is wrong (the other is right) and the A4 has two versions. The A4 can be used in many ways. E.g. You can ask them to write four statements (where one is true and the rest is false) and then they pass to another student to work it out. Alternatively you could write on the statements and they could identify the right and wrong ones. You can change the statements. For example on the A5 you could make both statements false (catches them out Ha Ha!) Enjoy. Please do leave feedback if you found it useful. Thank you.

Quadrilaterals Full Complete Lesson Plan & Resources for Interview Ofsted Observation Engaging

This was used for a Y7 interview lesson, but could easily be adapted for any age probably between Y5 to Y10 depending on ability. It is rich in discussion, engagement and activity so ticks a lot of boxes. The lesson plan includes a full commentary on what is going on so you will be able to show what you were trying to achieve. It also lists a number of ideas to use next lesson to show that you have thought about "where next". It is full of many activities - more than you could possibly achieve in a lesson - so it is pretty comprehensive. I last used it two years ago and have since learnt a lot more about Maths Mastery, lesson planning, engagement and challenge, etc and as yet haven't updated this resource to accommodate these improvements. So it is up to you to pick and choose the bits you want to use. However, the basic change I would make if I used this now would be to reduce it down to one starter, one main and one plenary and then focus more on achieving a more specific learning objective and then assessing progress on this. So I wouldn't actually change the bits I would use now - just cut out many of the other bits. In other words by buying this you are getting a superb bundle of resources. Use the lesson PowerPoint to prompt you for the order for the lesson. Most of the activities mentioned in the lesson plan and PowerPoint are included - (I couldn't locate them all). The runaround activity mentioned but not completely there is simply place the names of the 10 quadrilaterals around the room. The students are then given lots of property cards and have to go around the room putting the cards with the right quadrilaterals. This does work very well. All of this does represent a huge amount of work. Some of the resources ideas are adapted from the Web but all have been improved to make more effective in my style of lesson. There is also a link to a very good song on YouTube which the children love. This got me the job I went for two years ago. I'm sure it could do the same for you too! :)

Set of cards for sharing out to the whole class. They work out the answers for their cards. You show the PowerPoint which gives the prompts and the students have to hand back their cards as theirs come up. Pretty simple but the kids love it. It wouldn't take much to edit the cards docx to turn it into a back up worksheet so that something can be put into their book.

Successful Silence 5 minute Quiet Time Lesson Strategy Positive Behaviour Idea Lesson Study

Simple idea....Make sure the student have everything they need to do the work. Make sure you have prepped them and given them opportunities to discuss it and ask questions. Check everyone understands what to do and how to do it. Then give them the task and insist on five minutes of "Successful silence". During this time they are absolutely not allowed to talk - even the students with TA's. That way they are given the chance to work quietly. This is something the students have said they want - quiet time to work in. This was done as a "Action Research Lesson Study" with the North East Teacher Development Trust Network. Circle Circumference Learning Collaborative Magenta Principles Mastery Activities & WS

A series of activities to consolidate (Master!) understanding of how to work out the circumference of a circle given the radius or diameter. It is designed to be used after we've investigated how PI comes from C / d and we've introduced the idea of C = PI x d. There are three sets of cards which are ready to be printed out on different coloured card. Each card activity has a matching work sheet done as a sticker so that there is a record of the activity in the pupils exercise book. Each activity card set is designed to be given to be a mixed ability table of four pupils. They discuss and (hopefully!) develop their understanding! Card set 1 is given out as 20 cards where the pupils "Diamond Nine" (or any other valuing/ranking/ordering layout) the cards discussing which are the most useful facts for finding the circumference. There are few wrong answers as most of the points are right for most questions. The sticker backs this up into the books. Card Set 2 is given out as 16 cards where the pupils again rank which are the most important to remember when doing their working. Again they all are correct so it's a discussion and learning activity. The sticker is then just a check list to go in their books. I will always ask them to use a highlighter pen to indicate the key phrases etc. Card Set 3 is given out as a set of 9 cards. (Print out one card as an answer sheet for you) and the pupils simply have to put the cards in order. The sticker then requires them to back it up in to their books. This activity uses some of the ideas which our school has been made aware of in recent courses - a) Magenta Principles by Mike Hughes and b) Achieving Mastery in Mathematics.

Over a hundred ideas for lessons. Wrote this a couple of years ago and then updated this week after two years of working in a Requires Improvement school where I've had a lot of feedback and so had lots of improvements. Most of the ideas are innovations of other peoples ideas but I've always tried to put an element of fun into the lessons. I am sure that you will find at least ten of these which you will like which you haven't seen before or thought of before and you will want to try out. Not all ideas will work for you and either way they need to fit in with your school ethos and the current trends in your school. However there is loads in here to think about. Lots of these ideas have further detail as a separate TES resources listed in my TES shop. If you download this I would very much welcome it if you could write a review. Divide your wall space into different sections and label each section with the "Poster Headings". In particular add the "Finished what next?" labels onto the "Finished board" as a suggestion for what students can do when they have finished their set work If you like this then please check out my many other Maths activities listed on my TES Resources shop and pages including many Premium resources which may be able to save you lots of time and give you some useful ideas. Triangle Type Properties Classification Magenta Principles Maths Mastery Rap Battle Fun Activity Show the PPT. Have the discussion. Back it up with the the stickers the next lesson to get something in their books. Great for you to see what their level of understanding is. Lots of fun. Play some Eminem in the back ground and get them to rap their answers. Best answers so far ....I'd be a scalene triangle because I will have the greatest number of different weapons (i.e. angles) ....I'd be a very acute angled triangle because I could stand further away. I've thrown in somehelpful PowerPoints and word docs which will be needed to start the discussions.

Each slide asks "What is this number divisible by?" It then uses animation to show the factors of that number. A prompt then asks "How do we know". I'm planning to use this as a starter to learning Divisibility. The pupils will display their answers on their indivudal pupil whiteboards and then answer "How do we know" to the class or to their table mates.

Special Number Properties Primes Factor Multiple Key Word Flash Cards SNATCH MATCH activity game

All the key words you need for number properties lessons at KS3. Any of these words can be printed out and laminated on A5 size cards for the "SNATCH MATCH" game. This is where the words are blu tacked to the wall and students stand a metre away. Teacher (or a TA or competent pupil) asks questions where the answer is one of the snatch match cards. The students are usually in two teams facing the wall. Two students at a time have the opportunity to snatch the right card. Loads of fun! 245 Maths Mental Arithmetic Numeracy Oral Questions and Answers KS2 and KS3.

Made this a few years ago when there was still a MA test at KS2. I collected all the KS2 15 second questions I could and then made a few more versions of each type until I ended up with all these. You print them out on A4 card. Fold each card in half. Then give one sheet to a student. He/She then reads questions to his/her partner. If needed he/she shows the question hint which is on the far right of the table - hence the fold in the card. These work really well. Makes a nice lesson starter routine or ender. There are 45 sheets of A4 so should take a while for them all to be seen by every student.
