All About the Bronze Age! (Double Lesson)
In this engaging lesson, children are introduced to the Bronze Age. In particular, they learn how:
-the world changed from the stone age to the bronze age;
-people made and used bronze;
-the bronze age came to different civilisations at different times;
-the discovery of bronze, alongside other discoveries, changed daily life.
The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey:
-Knowledge recall - gauging what children know/ can remember about the Stone Age, in order to secure a foundation for their learning;
-Discovering how bronze was made, and how it was first used at different times by different civilisations;
-Reading and comprehending information about daily life in the Bronze Age;
-Creating a report about what they have learnt, using the clear and logical report template;
-Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective.

The Diary of Anne Frank - The Context of the Holocaust
This engaging and informative lesson helps students to understand the key features of the social and historical context of Anne Frank’s Diary, through learning about The Holocaust and Nazi-occupied Europe in the 1940s. Furthermore, students learn to identify and analyse features of context within specific sections of Anne Frank’s Diary - making appropriate links between text and context.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
-Understanding the key features of the Holocaust through watching and comprehending an informative (and age-appropriate) video;
- Reading and understanding extracts from the opening section of Anne Frank’s Diary;
- Linking their understanding of social and historical context to what they read in the text;
- Analysing how the horrors of the Holocaust are evident through Anne’s account of her family’s experiences;
- Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts.
Included is:

War Horse - Historical Context: World War One!
This engaging and informative lesson enables students to understand the key features of the historical context of World War I, in order to gain a clearer of understanding of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. In particular, students learn about the key features of World War I (including the role of horses) before linking their understanding of historical context to different extracts from the text. Finally, they analyse Morpurgo’s key intentions/messages in including such ideas within his novel.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
Researching and understanding key information about World War I, including how it was initiated, the role of horses, life in the trenches, and going ‘over the top;’
Linking the key features of context to sections of the text;
Reading selected extracts from the text, in order to link ideas regarding context and text together;
Analysing Morpurgo’s key messages and ideas in through his depiction of the historical context;
Creating their own anti-war propaganda posters, detailing what war was really like for young soldiers;
Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts;
Included is:

Selected extracts (from chapters 2, 4, 7 and 8);

These 16-page resource booklets contain a wide range of challenging and engaging comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of all 15 of the ‘Power and Conflict’ poems in the newest exam board anthologies. Teachers have found the activities particularly useful throughout teaching, or for exam revision or guided reading sessions. This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of the chapters 3 to 4 of Emma Carroll’s 'Secrets of a Sun King.’ In this section of the text, Lil meets Tulip and Oz for the first time, and visits her Grandad in the hospital, where she learns of the curse.
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving information;
-Inferring and deducing hidden meanings;
-Linking ideas from the text to context;
-Sequencing the key events of the chapters.
The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning.
