This response is designed for use with the Cambridge International iGCSE (UK and US) and is equally suitable to use with a Key stage 3 or 4 group to build on their reading skills, analytical skills and response writing skills. This resource includes the PDF of the short story and offers a complete route through this narrative set in 1960s South Africa, as such this would be an ideal text to draw on for Black History Month (October) too. This lesson uses a range of active learning methods to teach reading skills and in turn the enjoyable nature of the lesson helps secure learning into student’s long term memory banks. This Literacy Programme is 3 of 3 for use with year 8s across an entire term and forms part of a newly written programme that builds on the strengthened demands of the KS2 literacy skills and the Year 7 Programme also available on TES. This resource includes a PDF version of uthe programme plus an Adobe version that is editable so that the name of your school/behaviour policy can be incorporated into the documents. The powerpoint presentation is used to test the weekly skills gained by your students and allows you to track progress and build in additional intervention for areas of shortfall post completion. All Literacy Programmes in this collection are downloadable in bundles of year groups and as a Whole School KS3 Programme, with all elements building on the skills in the earlier years and terms.

My students loved this scheme of work and it enabled us to set classroom rules for learning within a relaxed bubble of learning. This lesson uses a paper thematically linked to 'Space' and takes students through a series of leading questions in order to help them break down the methods they can use to approach this final question on the Non Fiction paper. It also includes reference to PALS as a method of talking about authors ideas and perspectives. My year 11 group found this lesson enormously clarifying as a revision lesson.
