Fraction cupcakes fun lesson & working wall posters year 1 introduce 1/2 1/4 whole numbers KS1 maths
Fun presentation which introduces the concept of fractions through cupcakes!!
Teachers- make sure you have enough cupcakes and plastic knives for all children and grown ups in your class- make sure everyone can join in and have fun! Also, make sure you have white boards and pens handy. I taught this lesson as a fun fraction introduction- the whole lesson was spent eating cupcakes and I used photographic evidence in the children’s books, so you may also want to have a camera close by!
The presentation talks through fractions step by step- first looking at what a whole is, then a half and then a quarter. It discusses how much there is all together and how much is left.
The mathematical language of numerator and denominator is introduced.
It uses visual images to help the children to cut their cupcake properly and has prompts to tell them when they are allowed to eat a piece! It includes lots of question prompts that you may want to use as a whole class/table groups/partners etc.
Also included is a presentation with slides that are handy for your working wall- add these after teaching this lesson so that children have a visual reminder of 1/2, 1/4 and whole and this lesson for the rest of this topic.
bundle of display/working wall bunting titles/banners Science, Maths, English and more KS1 KS2
A set of 6 bunting display titles- Enlgish, Maths, Science, Topic, PSHE and Notices.
These are all black bunting with white letters but are editable so you could change the colours to suit your classroom.
Simply laminate, hole punch the top corners and thread onto string or ribbon.
KS2 science LIGHT & SHADOWS 2 experiments coloured shadows & multiple light sources EAL differentiat
Here is a presentation and resources for two science lessons on light and shadows.
The first experiment is to find out what happens when multiple lights are shone on an object.
The sceond experiment is to find out what happens when different coloured lights are shone on an object.
I carried this out with my year 6 class, I have a high number of EAL and New to English children and so there is resoures to support their learning included.
Each test has a scaffolded write up for NTE children. My HA children were expected to write it up independently, including the same sections as the NTE children. The MA chidren were able to look at the NTE write up sheet as a starting point to supprot them in their independant write up.
Also included is a NTE word mat with pictures and a scientific vocab mat that is relevant to this science topic.
The last slide on the powerpoint has lots of extension questions to do with this topic. These could be used in many ways for example; as an extension for the HA children or a class choice on what to explore next.
NTE N2E EAL LA electricity vocab/vocabulary cards with symbols and real pictures UKS2 LKS2
Set of eight vocabulary cards for use in electricity science lessons in upper and lower key stage two.
Each card shows not only shows the word and symbol but also a picture of what the item looks like in ‘real life’ to help especially EAL and NTE children during these lessons.
fun & active telling the time activity- differentiated challenges for KS1 and LKS2 12/24 hour clock
This is a fun and active maths lesson for teaching time.
I did this in the hall, we used hula hoops as our clock faces and arranged the numbers and clock hands around these. It would also be a great outdoors activity to inject some fun into maths!
The bundle includes numbers 1-24 and roman numerals I - XII, meaning that the clock is a flexible resource to be used in lots of ways with children of a variety of ages.
There are 5 sets of challenge cards- o’clock and half past, 15 minute intervals, 5 minute intervals, 1 minute intervals and converting to the 24hr clock. These would all work very well with the roman numerals as well as the numbers. Depending on the age/level of the children, simply setting up the roman numeral clock may be a challenge!
The challenge cards work well to meet objectives across KS1 and LKS2 and also as differentiation within a year group or as a recap of prior learning.
bundle/unit of work KS2 non-chronological reports presentation WAGOLL planning sheet third person
Bundle of resources for KS2 non-chronological report writing.
I used these resources to write non-chronological reprots on volcanoes, but I have kept the resources generic so you could use them to write reports on any subject. (The WAGOLL is about snakes.)
The following is included:
PowerPoint presentation that goes through the entire unit of work from introducing what non-chronological reports are, throught looking at features, planning and writing the reports.
WAGOLL , three are included, one is a basic WAGOLL and the other two have features to spot with boxes for colour coding, these are differentiated for higher and lower abilities.on different sections of this and used it for peer-assessment.
One of the slides on the PowerPoint has a cmpleted WAGOLL features slide. I zoomed in
Working wall poster for writing in first/second/third person.
Worksheet to practise writing in third person (I used this as homework).
Non-chronological report planning sheet which follows the format of the WAGOLL.
Non-chronological report write up sheet.
MATHS CAFE year 2 KS1 differentiated money activity finding total and change addition subtraction
Fun maths cafe activity for year 2.
A good consolidation activity for the end of a unit on measurement with money.
Covers finding the total of different items, finding out how much change would be given and two step problems.
I used this at the end of the White Rose Maths Autumn Block 3 unit on money.
HA questions are word problems, children have to read and understand the questions and decide what operation to use independently.
MA questions have bar models to support children’s calculations. These bar models have parts filled in to begin with but gradually, less is filled in to encourage independence. Some two step problems also included to provide an extra challenge.
40 sets of arithmetic/numeracy starters/morning work year 5 & 6 answers 4 operations SATs revision
Here is another set (see my other resources for more!) of numeracy starters, ideal for use with UKS2. (EDITED- there had been some mistakes, these have now been checked and are all correct!)
Each set has 4 questions- one for each of the four operations. The three sets increase in difficulty.
UKS2 children should be able to quickly do the easiest set mentally, the hardest set includes decimals.
I use these on a morning while taking the register- challenge the children to complete them all in 10 minutes, then I put the answers on the board and they self assess them. This is great speed practice in the run up to SATs.
Would also work very well as a quick starter in maths lessons.
40 sets of arithmetic starters/morning work for year 5 and 6 with answers UKS2 4 operations maths
A power point that contains 40 sets of maths arithmetic challenges.
I used these as morning work with my year 6 class to provide extra opportunity to practise using the four operations.
The questions alternate between straight forward calculations, finding the missing digits questions and multiply and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000.
They are differentiated A-C. A questions do not involve exchanging or carrying and so are ideal for LA or MA/HA to complete mentally. B involves exchanging and carrying and C involved decimals up to three decimal places.
Each day has two slides- the questions and then the answers and so are easy for children to self-assess.
The title slide says morning work, autumn 2 as this is when I used them but this could easily be changed if needed.
I have more sets available.
50 Arithmetic starters and answers for LKS2 Year 3 and 4 maths or morning work (SET 1)
Set of 50 arithmetic starters with answers suitable for lower key stage two
A variety of quick activities to practise the four operations at the start of maths lessons or as morning work.
The difficulty of the starters vary meaning that different slides can be selected to suit the needs of your specific class.
This set of starters has more addition and subtraction questions (see my other sets for more division and multiplication).
Year 3 equivalent fractions using cuisenaire rods - concrete resources lesson & display poster LKS2
Full lesson on introducing equivalent fractions to year 3.
This is a hands on lesson- children will spend the full lesson exploring fractions through cuisenaire rods.
I carried this lesson out with the children working in small groups. I blew the included recording sheet up to A3.
There is a box for them to physically place their cuisenaire rods down and record the fractions that they represent. There are more boxes for children to record equivalent fractions. I then took a photograph of the completed sheet as evidence for children’s books (there is space for names on the sheet to make this easier!).
Included is a power point (with learning objective, lots of mathematical questions and plenary), recording sheet and a fraction wall display poster (I blew this up to A3 for my working wall and reduced it to A5 for each child to stick into the back of their maths books for future reference).
Year 3 addition and subtraction arithmetic and problem solving 8 homework worksheets and answers
8 homework sheets to practise addition and subtraction skills.
Enough for the full half term when we cover addition and subtraction. They gradually get more challenging when given in the correct order:
1 and 2. addition without regrouping and another with regrouping.
3 and 4. subtraction without exchange and one with exchange.
5 and 6. use the inverse to find missing numbers.
7. pyramid problems where children must decide when to add/use the inverse.
8. word problems.
answers are included with each worksheet
Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words on bricks working wall English display LKS1
Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words on bricks- separate documents so if you only want to use one year group there is no need to sort them.
In basic cursive font.
I add these to my ‘Word Wall’ display gradually as more and more of the words are taught- the children love to watch the wall getting bigger!
If these words are mis-spelled in children’s work, I direct them to the wall and they correct them independently.
KS1 YEAR 2 Place Value match matching and comparing game cards activity place value counters
Place Value matching game ideal for use in year 2.
Pictorial representations of numbers below 100 using tens and ones place value counters.
Smaller than, larger than and equal to symbols also included to add extra challenge for more able children.
