Bloom's for EAL and Entry Level Students

This is a grid with question openers and tasks going through Bloom's taxonomy. It avoids modals (would, could, should, might) and compound tenses and uses simple language structures that students at an early level of English language acquisition can access.

A wonderful picture by the artist Trevor Mitchell, with various exercises on the present continuous tense. When I contacted the artist for permission to use his picture, I found that he lives just a few streets away from me!

Shapes on the High Street

A two page activity to get your students talking and writing about shapes. Parts of this could be used as starters and it could certainly lead to a survey: go onto the street and see how many shapes you can spot and in what circumstances. EAL teachers can use this to teach/reinforce prepositions and the present continuous tense.

This is a writing mat for pupils - they have to follow the instructions to help them with their writing. This is a form to help self-assessment for EAL pupils.

A short reading comprehension with a true and false exercise and some questions. Focus past simple tense. Check out the template; it's definitely got the wow factor! I got this from the best EAL site ever - eslprintables. If you are an EAL teacher, join up. It&'ll be the best thing you ever did.

NASSEA Step levels for students

I have simplified the language of the NASSEA steps, so that students can be involved in their assessments and understand where they are and what their targets are.

King Salvo and the Wise Witch

A short story on a ppt, (32 slides) with some images and activities. This ppt accompanies my short story of the same title. The wise witch has cast a spell on King Salvo, but ultimately, will it help him to become a better king? A Midas-esque story!

Tutorial and model lessons for writing.

Take a basic plot and build it up into an outstanding lesson, with your students producing a piece of writing at the end. No resources are needed. Of course, you can produce resources to complement the lessons if you want. I have provided one differentiated question sheet which would be useful for EAL students. This is based on an idea by 'Lauriane'. I would love to meet her.

The language of Probability

This is a worksheet on everyday terms which can be used in probability. I prepared this when one of my students said he didn't know what 'certain' meant. I have also uploaded a ppt with the same language which can be presented as a game of Splat! or a card sort activity.

Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam

This is a mini-biography of Cat Stevens, with a true or false activity, comprehension questions and a language exercise. I did this with a year 9 RE group. They carried out a mini research project and then we compared the music of this artist at different stages of his life.
